Just thinking of getting saorsat but im unsure which one to get the aerial or the satellite dish version

I dont mind waiting till July for the satellite version but is it worth waiting for?

Is there a difference between the 2 ?

A few details might make your question easier to answer, do you have an existing aerial or satellite setup or a tv capable of Saorview reception?

Are you covered by Saorview terrestrial broadcasts?

Saorsat is the planned FTA satellite version of the Saorview digital terrestrial television service.

There is no announced start date for Saorsat, where did you get July?

Saorsat will require a dish and Ka band LNB (not available yet) and suitable satellite receiver. Saorview requires an aerial and suitable TV or STB.

Saorview with aerial is probably the most flexible and cheapest option and is available now.

It’s unlikely a service will be available before end of July 2011,

I read that bit wrong so August could be the date?

What size is your motorised dish? A different LNB will be required to receive the Saorsat signal, Ka band.

would there be any difference in the channels available out of interest?

Unknown at this time, RTÉ haven't released any information on the service yet.

I think even August could be (over?) optimistic. From official Saorview website (on today's date):
RTÉNL expect to be able to make more information publicly available about this new service in late 2011.

... late 2011 for 'more information'. Saorsat service launch would presumably follow after that. So, 'late 2011': August, September, October, November, December - take your pick. Go with Saorview (terrestrial) for now.

And that info is via expat of Astra2D website who got it from me, and I got it from Apogee.

RTE NL don't really do public info. RTE only do so when something is ready. Neither will make any comment or announcements until the Saorsat service is live and LNBFs are available. The Saortv.info information was suggesting that it was unlikely the the service would start before end July. That may have been written long before tests started and doesn't suggest August.

I think before Autumn is now unlikely. But you never know. It's like Kremlin Watching.

Something lost in translation methinks :D

"So when there is a satellite office at home, starting a regular and low-noise block available to my friend?" (Google Translate)

If you've a choice of getting a 3rd dish or an aerial for Saorview, remember that you technically need planning permission for more than 1 dish, but you are permitted to put up an aerial without obtaining this permission, which may make things a little simpler?

Headshot see if you can pickup the likes of TV3 with a rabbits ears - if you can then you will most likely receive saorview without the need for an external aerial. I am receiving saorview here in Dublin with some rabbit ears and the quality is great although you could be more remote.

EDIT: Saorview website says for Cashel: "We're sorry. Saorview coverage is a challenge in your area. Please consult a local aerial installer for further information. It is not possible to reach all locations by terrestrial means and RTÉNL are in the process of developing a free-to-air satellite solution 'Saorsat' which will provide coverage to any blackspots."

I would still test a pair of rabbits ears because you have a transmitter at Cahir and another at Clonmel and could possibly pickup the signal with one.

Look here. Probably go for one that does about 25km and has a high 45/46 dB. If it doesnt work then just return it. I got mine in Argos.

I went down the aerial route in the end. RTE 2 HD is pretty darn good :)
