Anyone else notice who's on the startlist this year? Has Michael Hutchinson changed his national affiliation?

Jaesus just assumed it was someone with the same name.
    But it's him all right.
    Dr O Hutch now ......

PS he is from Ballymena but always rode on a GB licence up to now, entitled to either though (just not both at the same time !!)

He came 2nd to Wiggins in Brit 10mile TT IIRC and won the longer TT last week??
    Or am I mistaken?

This is the lad that writes for CW right?

He did come 2nd to Wiggins in the UK 10mTT Champs a few weeks ago!

Does this mean he can switch backwards and forwards at will, cancelling one licence to take up the other?

It will be interesting to see if Cycling Weekly have a take on this ...

Yep, same guy. Also wrote The Hour.

I don't know if those 10 mile or 25 mile championships are categorised the same as the "official" nat champs, where you get the jersey and stuff like that. Anyone know?

I guess its one of the many quirks and shared histories of those born in these islands.

So who's the favortie? McCann or this Hutchinson chap?

Fill me and any other ignoramuses(ignorami?) in.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

If Hutchinson's riding he'll be a very strong favourite - he's clocked under 18 minutes for the 10 mile (nearly 54 kph)

EDIT - he's also trying out some new £1,000+ TT bars at present

How about martyn Irvine? Does the track transfer to the road for TT's?

Yes, very much so, particularly given the spread of events he does in the omnium, and he's also done well in previous TT championships

I would hope for a podium finish for him, but can't see past Hutchinson if he is riding

That would mean, in theory, he could be UK and Ireland's national champion. That can't happen, surely?

Lets hope he gets 2nd !!! it's really a bit late to be switching !!!!

Wiggins is British Nat Champ(Jersey wearer) and also won in 09. They run their Championships in Sept. Hutch last won Gold in 08.

I think the mileage records/championships are run under the seperste TT org in Britian

I remember a race a few years ago the John (A)Hearn in the South west. A certain lad Darryl Webster who was a multi british champion did the race and was expected to runaway with the TT. Now I am getting old but I think a certain legend by the name of Calally won the TT much to the displeasure of DW so I wouldnt mind about who did what

I think McCann has the edge but hutchinson will be close.

    My top 6 are

    McCann
    Hutchinson
    Irvine
    Bennet
    Collis
    Cassidy

Surely Roche should be doing the TT. If only to spend time on the bike and get better at a discipline that he clearly struggles with.

If he doesn't do the former it'll explain the latter

PS McCann holds the fastest UK all comers time for 25 miles so is actually quicker than Hutchinson. He's also more used to riding "sporting" courses. I'd give him the edge over Hutchinson but only just.

As far as I know, Bennett and Cassidy aren't riding the time trial. McLaughlin is the only An Post rider who is.

Completely agree with this. He should be getting in all the practice he can get before he does the final time trial of the Tour.

I don't think he's even in the country today.

EDIT: Forgot it's on tomorrow, not tonight. Anyway, I was told last night he wasn't flying in till Friday evening. Whether that's because he can't come any sooner or because he decided against the TT, I don't know.

Btw I think Martin also should ride theTT.
It is highly possible that his place on a TDF team comes down to a trade off between a weigh up of riders who are strong in mountains vs strong in TT

Good to see Bramier and Deignan doing it.

The 10 mile, 25, 50, 100, 12 hour, 24 hour etc are RTTC championships. Different organisation to British Cycling, slightly different rules.
McCann's 25 record was ratified by the RTTC and set on a course that had a slightly greater distance between the start and finish lines than would be permissible by the UCI.
Having said that 'Hutch' had been chasing that record for years and McCann parachuted into Wales on a float day and snatched it from under the regular British TT guys' noses. I don't think the British comics have forgiven him yet!
While it was definitely a mega fast course (check out the stats, see how many riders beat 50 minutes), it was a terrific record to get, having been held by Chris Boardman for something like 15 years.
I'd say Hutchinson is itching for a one on one with McCann. This could be the race of the weekend and I think it's fantastic that Hutchinson is racing over here. I hope they get a bit of a crowd.
As for the licence thing, Anto can fully clarify but as I understand it you don't have to have a CI licence to take part. Look at how many riders on the various race entry lists have licences from British Cycling, France and the USA. The key component of their licence is a UCI code with IRL on it which indicates eligibility for Irish championships and representative teams.

That's brilliant results from Shaw! I am looking forwards to see what he has to show on sunday. Going to watch the race. Should be good :)

Shaw pilots one of the tandems on the Paralympic squad also. He's a great rider and an asset to our squad.

So McCann held off 'Dr Hutch' but Brammeier showed the value of Protour racing. That was quality racing. Delighted to see Hutchinson ride it. It's a shame he wasn't available to Ireland when he was riding full time. It'll be interesting to see how the event is covered in his comic.

Amazing ride by Damian, nice to see his ability in perspective of the pros. I'll never forget my introduction to Damian's huge engine
