    The Black Irish of Montserrat

Irish people exiled by Cromwell and African slaves arrived on Montserrat at about the same time.

A mate of mine is Algerian, he give me a most interesting documentary on the relationship between our two countries. I must dig it out. It was made by an Irish man. It showed the movement of Irish slaves to Africa.

To this day they have red heads in Algerian that are descendants of those Irish slaves.

Interesting.I heard they were originally English protestants in Baltimore taken away by Algerian
pirates for some local Irish guy who wanted them gone from the area?
Not sure if that's true or not.

I'd lay money the red-headed Kabyles have strictly nothing in common genetically with the Irish.

Barbary pirates would attack European and American ships to capture slaves. Occasionally they would raid coastal towns. Besides Ireland they even went as far as Iceland. The slaves would be forced to convert to Islam. Their families, if they could afford it, could pay a ransom to get the enslaved person back. The US government eventually got pi$$ed and bombed the hell out of Tripoli and the attacks stopped.

The idea that "some local Irish guy" hired the pirates to enslave the people of Baltimore is nonsense.

Not as strong, but the accents in Newfoundland have Irish twangs to them as well. Kinda funny to listen to!

I was watching France 24 at some ungodly hour one night. Some French military expert was on talking about how NATO troops had got into an unnecessary firefight in Afghanistan. He said that they could learn a lot from the Irish experience in Lebanon where the Irish guys always talked themselves out of sticky situations ("come on now lads, would ye put the guns away, there's no need for this type of thing at all, at all") instead of shooting the place up.

    And here it is. http://www.conamara.org/atlantean.htm

Well worth the watch, gives great insight into a lot of our sea faring traditions along with music, culture etc.

That talk out of tricky situations would have taken days, weeks if not months to achieve and who's going to argue with a bunch of charming Irishmen anyway ? The Irish UN were very popular over there but some warring factions just see the blue UN berat and don't care for the nationality wearing it regardless of where they came from .

    Lucky bastards?

The islands capital was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1995, rendering half the landmass uninhabitable to this day.

I was going to post about Atlantean but don't recall any slavery connection. I saw it once back in the 1980s. I recall that conventional scholars at the time were very negative towards Bob Quinn's thesis. It would be interesting to see if any of his ideas have now been accepted or totally rejected.

Yeah, The slavery part may have been in the conversation I had with the guy who gave it to me.

I did hear there was controversy about his thesis all right but a lot of what is said in the doc makes sense and he does go a long way to back them up.

I was only about 10 when I saw it but was fascinated. I looked it up some years ago and maybe I came across your link.

I found the whole video here. I watched the first 5 mins, will leave the rest for tonight.

Isn't that because they are celebrating a slave revolt against their Irish/British slave masters who were all drunk on the day?

St Patrick's Day is a public holiday in Newfoundland for the same reasons it is here though.
