    Hi,

I am getting married soon and hoping to change my daughters name from double barrell to just one surname. Is this easily done? Can anyone give me any advice on how to go about it?

    Thanks

    Bob

You cannot actually legally change it but you can change it by common use. Just call the school / docs / dentist let them know you want the child referred to as Joe Bloggs rather than Joe Bloggs Smith, as soon as you have been using that name for 3 years (if I remember correctly) then a passport can be gotten in that name, the birth cert cannot be changed though.

I know that deed poll is necessary for changing first name.

I was told by our local registrar, that if the parents marry after the name is registered they need to go to re register with a copy of marriage cert, the child's original birth cert and ID.

I was given this info in January so shouldn't be out of date yet!

It may have changed but in circa 1996 they changed it to what I quoted above, I know as a family member tried to have their childs name changed in around 2001 when the father had left and not been seen for years, at the time children born after 1996 fell under the rule that the name could only be changed by common use.

That probably is the case in that situation SmelltheGlove, I am talking specifically about children who's births are registered before their parents marry. If their parents marry following the birth registry then the childs surname can be changed on the birth cert.

You are correct, I remember it being brought in and was an issue with people who were registering births without the fathers surname to claim single mothers but adding the name afterwards when they had a few bob. According to an act made in 2002 it can actually be re-registered due to marriage!
