Have this laptop about 2 years, wife turned it on today and all lights across speaker bar flash on for about 2 seconds and then laptop shuts down, it then does this every 5-7 seconds and won't start. I've googled the problem and it looks like this is a common problem on the DV6xxx and DV9xxx series HP's (and Compaqu's). From what I can see it is all to do with the solder used to connect the Nvidia Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to the motherboard which comes loose over time due to heat generated in the laptop. There are a number of clips on you tube from people who have experienced this problem and the steps that they have been forced to take to try repair it themselves (no help from HP as the problem generally doesn't present itself until your laptop is out of warranty).

Has anyone else experienced this and if so:

    did you get it repaired?
    where?
    How much did repair cost?
    How long did repair last?

Did anyone manage to contact HP and did HP Ireland offer any help?

    Any info appreciated.

    see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY_tXtr3LM0
try pressing gently from left to right along top cover ,about an inch from the power button.this may turn on the laptop,it works on my pals dv6000 hp.
on his one the lead from the power button needs replacing, it powers on ok,i had to delete data from drive f hidden partition, to stop it going into media player dvd mode.
so i never fixed the lead,he just powers on by pressing the cover.press gently, slightly above or under cover, led lights.
his grahics card works fine, i just knocked off mediaplay mode.

Thanks but that's not the problem, its definitely the overheating of the GPU, just poor design from HP. Have been looking on Youtube and there are hundreds of clips of people stripping their PC's down and heating the chip with a blow torch, crazy. HP have the CPU and the GPU beside each other, no heatsink and no thermal paste to dissipate the heat, no wonder they was a class action lawsuit in the US (now closed). Guess I'll just have to fork out for a repair:mad:

Did you get your laptop repaired after? Have a similar problem?

Hi. Its actually not the solder under the GPU that is failing but GPU card itself.
The only permanent fix is to replace GPU with a new one. Do not fall for reballing or reflow which usually works for a month and only "masks" the problem.

I discovered the problem online when it had just hit the street and got it worked on almost immediately as a result.

Unfortunately plenty others did not and they are at this late stage SOL.

You may have the laptop 2 years but the affected GPUs are 4 and 5 years old now.
