Do you believe in Croatia?

I don't. The only time you ever hear about the place is when that Eurotripe song contest comes on. So I simply refuse to acknowledge that it exists and serves merely as a filler contestant made up of supposedly talented singers from randomly selected countries that didn't quite make it to the final in their own country.

I know there is a blob of land slightly to the right of Italy but that belongs to Russia, Greece or one of those troublesome countries over there that draws a new border every day. Even if Croatia was real today it could be gone tomorrow, like Yugoslavia.

People were a bit standoffish until they realised we weren't English though.

stunning country, lucky to have visited there

funny thing about the airport in zadar, one of the roads into town crosses the airport runway so when a plane is taxiing in they have to bring down the barriers ala a railway crossing

edit that road has now closed since my visit :(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Zadar_Airport_Road_Crossing.jpg

Yes indeed I must go off on a tangent about how the place doesn't exist and how anyone who suggests it does is an inferior human being whenever Croatia is mentioned.

As well as weekly AH threads to remind everyone.

Then I'm off to troll the travel forum and tear into anyone who claims to be going there, tell them they're deluded and to go to a shrink before buying a ticket. But it wouldn't really be trolling, just annoying the sh1t out of everyone while meticulously sticking to the forum rules and laying off for a few weeks if the mods start to get on my case

They're so great because they're figments of your imagination. Your mind made them up in an effort of self preservation. To make you think you have something to live for basically

There's probably some sad individual in Croatia telling everyone that Ireland doesn't exist, and I'd be inclined to agree with him.

We just played them in an U21 World cup match, jesus, how did you not know this O.P

Did we win by default when they didn't show up?

Reliable sources have told me that such a match as stated above never took place....

So yeah, Croatia's not a real country yea...

But if the country doesn't exist, how the hell were Ireland playing them.

maybe they got mixed up between Croatia (fictional place) and Canada (real place, just about)

I always wonder about this, what is the perception of Ireland to outsiders in Europe who havn't been here. What was it like for them 20 years ago before we were in the news for all the wrong reasons? were they curios about the place, negative or just never thought about.

Croatia = virtual team for reasonably talented players whose home country wouldn't take them or if they were after pulling a Roy Keane they could go away and play for Croatia

Now Serbia are doing it right,

True the song could have come from the 1960s' but it does sound like a foreign language and slavic at that.

Rumour has it that a while back the tourist board there had a catchy marketing plan so that everyone would remember the existance of Serbia. Aparantly it went very well and 1914 was a bumper year for visitors.

I first heard about Croatia when they came outta nowhere to grab third place in the 1998 World Cup. Davor Suker was the top scorer of the tournament IIRC, what a legend. Since then I've always been kinda interested in Croatia, though I've never been. In general I am supportive of Croatian accession to the EU, but recently I had second thoughts about that when a load of them protested against the EU because we tried to bring one of their genocidal nutjob war criminals to justice. Cheek of us like. Still, it's a really fascinating country and I will definitely go there one day.

Wait, did I just answer this thread seriously?

being the one of the few paddys to be their... its ok... but like all eastern countrys.... their all just depressing unless your drunk ( european style dinners with 4-6 beers ftw )

worth a visit lads, namely if your single

It's still a bit run by organised crime. Which is fine until you end up assaulted by a gang, report it to the police, see the perps laughing with the cops and then be told that they found nothing and can't help.

It's a bit like bulgaria (DEN, DEN, DEN, DEN...) except beside Italy.

Were you actually at the tournament? I've been reliably informed that the whole thing was a sham, Suker was actually a fictional character, played by Jason Segel.

I can't believe that people still believe in Croatia after all these years. FFS people, it's just made up. There's no such thing. You're not going to heaven and you'll never get to Croatia.

    IT'S ALL MADE UP.
