A cyclist died today as a result of injuries sustained in a crash involving a taxi in Dublin city centre.

The incident occurred at the junction of Westmoreland Street and O’Connell Street shortly before midnight yesterday.

The cyclist (21) was taken to St James’s Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries this morning.

He was one of three males riding bicycles along Westmoreland Street at the time and gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen these cyclists beforehand to come forward.

Gardaí at Pearse Street are investigating the incident and can be contacted on (01) 6669000. Alternatively anyone with information can call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or contact any Garda station.

Terrible news, RIP. Difficult to comment without knowing circumstances but taxis are almost always bad news in my book and are perhaps the most serious threat to all cyclists out there given that they share the crap cycle lanes we have.

Very sad. That and D'Olier Street have to be the two most dangerous streets in Dublin.

21, very sad. Dublin is a very dangerous city to cycle in but its quite safe if you are careful and experienced and dont take risks/put yourself in dangerous situations. When I get home after a 5km in the city centre I feel more tired than after a 50km cycle thru the country, it's metally tiring keeping safe on city roads!

A tragic accident. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
It is always a shame to lose someone so young but particularly so in
    a road accident.
    RIP.

I cycle in and out of the city centre every day. I kinda forget how dangerous it is but its threads/news like this that remind me how vulnerable I am as a cyclist. RIP, very sad.

    So very young, that's awful.

(In passing, as well as refraining from speculating on what the circumstances of the collision were, can we also refrain from assertions of how dangerous cycling in Dublin is? I could cite statistics to the contrary, but neither assertion seems to me to belong in a thread of this nature.)

    OK to clarify

If a thread has "Condolence Thread" in the title, it must be just that, and not subject to extensive discussion about the circumstances or individual involved. Keep to the known facts, and don't challenge any statements made - press the report button if you have a problem with any post

There must be no speculation as to cause of death or fault (either in the condolence thread or elsewhere in the forum) - that is for an inquest or the courts to determine.

In this particular case if someone wants to start a separate thread about the dangers (or otherwise) of cycling in Dublin, that is fine, but it would not be appropriate to use this tragic death as an example of any particular danger in the absence of firm evidence supporting any assertions made

    Thanks

    Beasty
