Makes a change from people mounting each other to try get you to buy their 'anti-stink' juice. Still wouldn't make me want to buy it.

It's a perfume ad and it's French. How could it NOT be kind of weird?

Nothing the fashion industry puts forward as their ideal of beauty surprises me. The latest is to have men who look like women, going down the runway in women's clobber, no really!
Which is where fashion designers were heading all along really. Things like breasts and any kind of curves are so bad for the line of their clothes don't ya know  so best to get child-like anorexics or better still skinny male model for their female lines.
The fashion industry is sick to the core.

Nothing new there, a female friend of mine told me who worked as a commercial model that when you look at a packet of tights and admire the sexy smooth shapely legs advertising pic on the front they probably belong to a man.

So what's the 'ideal' these freaks are trying to portray?

    A pubescent androgynous skinny plankoid?

That would be the impression you get. Why they don't just cut to the chase and use more fellas like this is the only mystery...

Seems to me like it's a bit artsy and aesthetically interesting which is fairly consistant with Chanel's advertising in the past.

I wouldn't subscibe to the idea that it has any kind of sexual motivations for men or women. That reaction to it just speaks to me about the conditioning of the audience who've become accustomed to seuxal themes in adverts, which really is the norm in most cases.

I know I shouldn't laugh, but whenever the OP says 'that thing' it cracks me up :D

All that high fashion runway stuff is just ridiculous - always has been.

That's one of the new androgynous models I was thinking of in my post above. Couldn't remember his name. There's also an Australian guy who's modelling women's clothes.

A lot of French advertising is more whimsical and theatrical than what you would see otherwise - Chanel also did those long video adverts with Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tatou.

If you are looking for naked, greased up chicks, those are the Calvin Klein perfume ads...

Advertising people and the fashion world seem to think that men like very tall, very thin, very angular women. I'm sure the odd guy does (sure there's someone for everyone) but most guys prefer average-height, medium-build ladies. I'm not sold on the notion that men are after the female equivalent of Peter Crouch.

To be fair, he looked amazing as "The Bride" in this Gaultier show...

But, yes, skinny with high cheekbones and a good scowl is what the fashion industry generally looks for.

Are us men supposed to find that thing attractive?

Are women supposed to be jealous of it?

    :confused::confused::confused:

Sorry but the more I think about this, the more confused I am...

Why do you think that men are supposed to be attracted to her?

And why do you think that women are supposed to be jealous of her?

Is that what you think drives advertising - and in particular Chanel advertising? I'm not being snarky here; I'm genuinely curious.

They don't pick models based on their sex appeal. Some models aren't traditionally sexy/beautiful but are amazingly photogenic etc and vice versa. There's a lot more to it than picking someone that men/women 'like' in that sense.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at with my question to the OP. What photographs well is not necessarily what the 'man on the street' wants to see walking by on lunch break.

This girl looks quite plain normally, and is very very thin and flat-chested, but she has shot some absolutely stunning, memorable ad campaigns and editorials and is a great runway model.

Sorry but the more I think about this, the more confused I am...

Why do you think that men are supposed to be attracted to her?

No need to apologise. I presume that's a woman's perfume, thus, to sell stuff to men they usually put an attractive female in or around it. Standard wouldn't you say?
And why do you think that women are supposed to be jealous of her?

Maybe not jealous but see her appearance as some sort of ideal to be achieved?
Is that what you think drives advertising

I would say Insecurity, fear, sexual desire, aspirational lifestyle etc would be the the underlying message of most ads yes.
    - and in particular Chanel advertising?

Chanel? I wouldn't be too aware of their advertsing history tbh. If you asked me to name another Chanel ad I wouldn't be able to.
I'm not being snarky here; I'm genuinely curious.

Why so curious? I asked for it to be explained to me and you're asking me to explain my questions?

But do you buy perfume because you think the chick in the ad is hot, or because your girlfriend likes it? Or because the lady selling it at the cosmetics counter is cute?
Maybe not jealous but see her appearance as some sort of ideal to be achieved?

I think that depends on the product. Perfume is more emotional - people respond to scent differently than purely visual products. So most perfume ads, both on tv and in print try to set a mood, more than a purely "she's fabulous!" reaction.
I would say Insecurity, fear, sexual desire, aspirational lifestyle etc would be the the underlying message of most ads yes.

Perhaps. But I think the product being sold should be taken into account. Selling perfume is not selling bras or beer.
Chanel? I wouldn't be too aware of their advertsing history tbh. If you asked me to name another Chanel ad I wouldn't be able to.

But Chanel as a brand is very classic. So their advertising is not going to be as overtly sexy as, say, Calvin Klein or other brands.
Why so curious? I asked for it to be explained to me and you're asking me to explain my questions?

I was curious about what seemed to be your assumptions about how men and women respond to advertising. Who luxury brands are trying to appeal to, and the kinds of models and photographers they use is a completely different ballgame than selling, say, Club Orange. Plus I am a bit of an amateur photographer, so I guess I am interested in how people think print images should be received versus what the production team behind them is trying to do.

To be fair, he looked amazing as "The Bride" in this Gaultier show...

I wouldn't use the word amazing to describe that look personally.

I can think of plenty of words to describe that look but I might come across as uncouth and we couldn't be having that 'tall 'tall.

I'm not a good (planned) present buyer tbh. I'd only buy perfume for a girl if I knew she liked it.

If I decided to buy perfume as a suprise I'd probably ask one of the people who sell it to recommend me one.

I think she's pretty. That gamine look is very French. There seems to be a shunning in the French psyche for overt and obvious sexuality, despite their reputation as pervs. :pac:

Well, it isn't for everyone. But this is a coture show, and it is meant to be kind of fantasy-land. The Bride is usually the last piece to go down the runway, and so the designer usually tries to make a major statement. In this case, with the heels and headdress, you have basically a seven-foot tall man wearing a $30,000 dress who would easily be mistaken for a woman. So I'd say they got the drama part right there. :P

This particular designer is actually quite good at using a diverse range of models, including a 51-year old who closed one of his recent shows.
