If people find you interesting and you get a good spot, then yeah you can make a fair penny I'd say.

I read that a lot of now famous singers and chart artists started off in life busking and got discovered, now minted. Like Cheryl Cole.

A lot of places abroad you need a permit to busk that you have to pay for and it gives you designated times and places when and where you can busk.

Good idea and it means people aren't taking in money tax free and protects businesess from loads of useless gimps outside their premises.

Ah, grand, so there's no talent needed then.
*packs up gutair that I don't know any chords for and hits the streets*

I'll always throw buskers a couple of quid if they are in any way decent. It's nice to have music on the street and see people out doing something they love, trying to make a go of things.

They are infinitely preferable to some chap sitting there with a paper cup just expecting you to throw a few quid in or the bloody chuggers that litter the streets trying to make you feel guilty about some blind kids they couldn't give one sh1t about themselves while they try to pocket maximum commission to spend on cheap wine and hipster gear. In fact if anyone here wants to take to the street with a sturdy guitar and smash the pricks about the head that would be appreciated. You could call it street theatre and leave your guitar case open for people to make donations. I guarantee you will make an absolute fortune.

I did a bit of busking when I ran out of money in Australia.
Got around $15 per hour on average.

In some places you can make great money busking if you're any good. A friend of mine used carry his guitar around and play for an hour or so when he was hungry so he could get his lunch.
