Wipers= snap and no longer working

When I was out yesterday I stopped at some traffic lights making a turn, when all of a sudden I heard this bang from the front, like something had hit the windscreen/front of the car.

Next thing I know the wipers stopped working

There's a noise coming from them when they're turned on, and if i push them half way up the window the move ever so slightly to the side and back(a MM or two).

Not sure if it's in my head but they seem to move a lot easier, and with not much force I can use them with my hand pulling it up and down.
Never seemed to be so loose when working, pretty sure they're solid in place.

Any ideas of the damage and cost?

it sounds like the wiper linkage has broke. they sieze up an rust then fail. you can get a used one at a breakers.grease it up and not too difficult to fit yourself.
