Hi everyone, I'm desperate for some advice as I'm horribly indecisive! I have an offer to do a MSc in Psychological Studies in Glasgow Uni. I'd never been to Glasgow before & just recently went to the Open Day. Its a gorgeous Uni & looks like a great city but I'm just suddenly getting cold feet. I checked out the postgrad accommodation & wasn't impressed so if anyone has any advice on other, better places/areas to live I'd be so grateful!
I just looked up Liverpool Hope Uni today (another city I've never seen, grr) & thats sparked off more dilemmas.
Both places have pros & cons (academically & logistically) but if anyone has any first-hand experience (or know of people who do) of either city/uni or any advice like I said I'd REALLY appreciate it :)

Hey I got into the Msc in Glasgow too. Have you decided on what you are going to do?

Hey, thanks for the reply, I'm still undecided, although the fees for Liverpool are over £1000 more so that may just have made the decision for me! Have u done any research into accommodation over there?

I think Uni of Glasgow came 77 or 75 in the would Univ. ranking, its a member of Russell Group!! Overall the uni is very safe and so is the surround area's. It may be dangerous walking around late at night-like any of city, with a high satisfactory rate from students attended the Uni.

For accommodation have you looked at winton drive it's owned by the Uni. Try and live within the west-end it close to Uni and its Glasgow most safe's area. Also try the SRC website; http://www.glasgowstudent.net/advice/accommodation/

I hope this help...any more questions?

Hey I think I'm going to do Glasgow part time to reduce costs. Its a hefty sum. Hows your accommodation search going?

Glasgow is highly rated, while just about no-one has ever heard of Liverpool Hope. Glasgow is cheaper. TBH, unless there's something specific to your discipline that gives Hope an edge this is a no-brainer.

Glasgow has a decent night life as well, just so you know. ;)

    this is a no-brainer.

Hey Ulysees, its good to hear that. I'm just wondering if you could give me any advice on finding work? Cheers, Lisa

Fecked if I know, the way things are at the moment.

But in the current jobs climate, time on a post-graduate course is time well spent, IMO. And even though the jobs market is getting a bit rocky in the UK, you'll have a decent shot at finding work there with a Masters.

Thats cool, but I'm thinking more along the lines of work to tide me over while I'm doing the masters. Going to do the course part time and try to work full time. I have a masters in Criminology but its still very tough to find a decent job. I'm looking for anything really that will pay the bills. Is there somewhere that typically hires students>?

As an EU student Scotland will pay for your tuition fees.. all you'll need is living costs.

I'm at uni in Edinburgh and have been through to Glasgow quite a few times for gigs and shows so it is very lively .. Haven't been on a night out yet but I hear great things!
Also, Scotland's economy is doing much better than England's and I didn't have a problem getting a job last year.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for your help, its good to hear that you found a job quite easily. What are you studying?Unfortunately they only cover some postgraduate courses and the msc psychological studies isn't one of them. It costs 4500 which is why I'm going to do it part time. They do give a grant to anyone who is studying part time. 500 pounds, not much but its something.

Ah, that's annoying that your course isn't covered! But like you say, £500 isn't much but it'll help!!

I'm studying planning and property development at heriot-watt.

Hoping to get a maintenance grant from Ireland this year to help with living costs but I hear they didn't pay out until May/June this year for academic year 2010/11!!

Thanks for all the advice! Well havent heard back from Liverpool Hope yet anyway so I should probably just accept Glasgow before they give my place away  I haven't started looking for accommodation yet, I've heard that Byres Rd is nice but other than that I don't know where to start! With regards to the full-time/part-time thing, you may be able to squeeze in a full time job seeing as the classes are only 5-7pm maybe? I'm definitely going to have to go on a job hunt too as soon as I'm over there!

Hey Emilie, I was talking to a guy who did the course and he said its better to do it part time because the academic year is so short and over before you now it (essentially its only 22 weeks ending in march) Its great to get the course over and done with in one year, but even working part time while doing it full time can be stressful as they pile the course assignments on you. (This is what he felt at least) Your expected to do 35-40 hours of study if doing it full time and half that if its part time. I was surprised by that but considering the course offers BPS accreditation and is 180 credits (1 undergrad university year is 60 credits) I guess its not that surprising. Like you, I had planned to do it full time and get a full time job but after much thought & after talking to the guy who did it already, I decided I'm going to try to work full time, do it part time and just settle in glasgow for a bit. Thats why its good for me to be there for two years, I've been moving around way too much these last few years so I'll be nice to be in the one place. Ok I'm waffling on now. ha ha.. Anyways looking forward to meeting you! - (I think Full-time and part time are in classes together for half of the week)

Ah thats fair annoying, though I'd say it was nice to get that sum of money all at once.. :) If your applying for it this year, apply as soon as possible. My brother got an email from his college telling him that there will probably be delays again this year.
