    Hi All,

Buying a bike on the BTW scheme so need to start thinking about accessories. The hybrid bike I'm looking at is around the €700 mark which gives me around €300 for bits and bobs, but hoping to not spend all that.

    1) I've read a bit about locks and it's recommended to get two. A ULock and a cable. The Kryptonite Evo Mini 5 or New York Fahgettaboudit seem to be the best ones in that category to get. Can anyone recommend a cable lock? Do Cyclesuperstore out in Tallaght stock the Kryptonite range? I can't see anything on their website. If not, I might have to try other shops for the bike I want. (Only picked Tallaght as it's handy to get to)

    2) Helmets. Is there anything I need to know about helmets? Again, can anyone recommend a good brand or helmet in patricular?

    3) Lights. I know next to nothing about bike lights. Dynamo's were in fashion the last time I was on a push bike. I guess the good ones are now cree LEDs or similar. Can I get recommendations on lights too?

What else can I get on the scheme? High viz bag cover and vest I presume. What about bike shorts and jackets etc?

    Anything I'm forgetting?

According to the Revenue Guidance, the following safety equipment may be purchased under the scheme:
    • Cycle helmets which conform to European standard EN 1078
    • Bells and bulb horns
    • Lights, including dynamo packs
    • Mirrors and mudguards to ensure riders visibility is not impaired
    • Cycle clips and dress guards
    • Panniers, luggage carriers and straps to allow luggage to be safely carried
    • Locks and chains to ensure cycle can be safely secured
    • Pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant to allow for minor repairs
    • Reflective clothing along with white front reflectors and spoke reflectors

Hence hi-viz jacket - yes, shorts - no

I'm not too knowledgeable on what you need, but if you look at the chain reaction cycles website all the gear they sell has customer reviews, which I have found useful in the past. They sell just about everything possible cycle related - and usually cheaper - but it is a good research tool. You can list items in each section by user review which can help too

Surely it would be overkill for someone just starting out and out of the grand I have to spend, it would be wiser to spend on other accessories?

No deep section wheels unless bought as as part of a "complete bike"

I've started a BTW megathread where all future questions concerning the rules of the scheme should be directed
