206 overheating?

    Hi All,

    I hope I'm in the right place, not looking to do a DIY job, more looking for a thought on what might be up / possible costs! Saving for a new car, and early next year can't come fast enough. :(

    2004 206.

    Pulling in to the estate this evening, the temperature gauge shot up to max, and the STOP light was flashing. I kept going as my house is just around the corner, and by the time I got there it went back to normal.

    I parked and turned it off. Turned it back on and it shot up again after a minute, and the fan was going full whack. I turned it off, had dinner and ran again for a while and completely normal.

    Also, the diagnostics light is on while the temp gauge is up.

    Any ideas? Could it be a sensor or something? I can't imagine it going back to normal so quick. Safe to drive do you think?

    Could be a sensor alright, the 306 had dodgey temp sensors so its possible that the 206 has too. Let it cool down and check the coolant level firstly and if thats ok get a diagnostic check to see if you have a wonky sensor, and while he's at it get him to see if your head gasket is gone or some other problem with the cooling system..

    Those were two words I didn't want to see :)

    Have let it cool down for a couple of hours now so might have a look.

    The first thing to check is the coolant level. The rad fans give trouble on those. They have 2 speeds, the high speed doesn't kick in unless it get really hot. Perhaps the slow speed fan control has failed.

    Check the rad fan working. Start her up and let run for a bit - The fan should kick in when the engine gets hot (keep your fingers clear of the fan!) - Also look at coolant container (there's a white opaque container that should have coolant up to about half way - Don't open when hot!)

    Thanks lads. Couldn't see how high coolant should go to earlier, but it is just about at max.

    Fan is definately working, was going full whack earlier.

    Diagnostics light still on now when temp gauge is back down

    It may only be the temp sensor so as this should cause the engine light to come on. Overheating caused by a faulty thermostat or similar would rarely throw a warning light.

    Thanks for that, Yeah the gauge went down very quickly too, which i would have thought meant it wasn't actually overheating. I'll give him a buzz in the morning and see if he thinks it is ok to drive to him - thanks as always.

    You might even get away without a diagnostic check to find the sensor, as far as I can remember its the sensor with the green plug around the thermostat housing, about €13 from peugeot..

    The diagnostics light was on this morning. I drove the five or six miles to him and no sign of gauge going high. He revved the bejaysus out of it and it went up. Hopefully will be a small job.
