Garage charging 17.5% VAT on diesel receipt?

    Just going through my diesel receipts for motor tax account and I noticed a certain garage that I've used recently charging 17.5% VAT. The company on the receipt is listed as a UK company? Is this illegal?

    Not being smart but where's the garage?! If it's in Ireland then obviously it's not right!

    Have you checked the calculation to see if the VAT rate actually is 17.5% though, that it's not just the way the receipt is printed...?

    No it's not.

    They have to charge Irish VAT on Sales in Ireland

    What is the vat rate on fuel in Ireland?

    I know in the UK that vat on domestic gas and electric is only 5%.

    VAT on Petrol is at the standard rate of 21%

    And just to clarify in case anyone googles this and reads it - vat on petrol isnt reclaimable as a business expenses but vat on diesel is.
