Fees in a district court appeal

I heard once of this person who claimed to have been charged 1200 for representation by J counsel and solicitor at a district court appeal . She alledged the case was adjourned to another date and was then charged another 1200 euro for that date which was further adjourned ( later she received her file and it turns out this was pre- agreed by both solicitors who had prior engagements yet when she travelled 100 odd miles to court she was told " it wont get on today" ) . On the third occasion two days prior the hearing the solicitor said he needed a further 600 euro. She told him she would pay him but could only do so four days after the date of hearing when she expected her 3rd level grant cheque to clear.
The solicitor refused to represent her and did not show on the morning of the hearing. The J counsel said to the Judge I have no instruction in the matter, to which the Judge said ' oh your coming off record?', She (J counsel) then replied 'No I cant its a district court appeal' There was a nod/ wink whatever between both and the J counsel left. To all you legal eagles out there WHATS THE STORY?
My friend is on about taking the solicitor to court ( I dont see how) to get her money back.
