From performances this year...it looks like both teams are pretty poor.

Mayo drew with London in normal time which is inexcusable for a team like them. Galway are missing Meehan and Armstrong and have disappointed over the last few years.

I really have no idea who will win atm....maybe Mayo will sneak it because of the Galway injuries.

I can't imagine many of Mayo team that started v London will line out on Sunday. Galway have the boost of the Under 21 success will be interesting to see how many of those players will start?

If Mayo defence hold firm they should be able to tag on enough at the other end to take this. Big if though.

Any clue on any buses going from Galway guys?

I'll have some 11/8 about Galway.

The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. We need to bring in these younger players and give them a chance. They can't do much worse than what's been there for the last few years.

Both teams are going into this game with more questions than answers. I don't see either team being involved when the serious stuff happens later on in the Summer, so who wins on Sunday mightn't be worth much more than local bragging rights.

There'll be three I'd say at most. Colin Forde at full back, Johnny Duane at corner and Mark Hehir at centre forward. From current word team will be something like:

    A Faherty
    J Duane
    C Forde
    A Burke
    G Sice
    G Higgins
    G O'Donnell
    F Hanley
    J Bergin
    E Concannon
    M Hehir
    G Bradshaw
    P Joyce
    P Conroy
    C Bane

Maybe Danny Cummins will be used as a sub and maybe have a slight chance of a start.

Regardless of how the teams performed so far this year, this will be tight as pretty much all Mayo - Galway championship games are. You might as well toss a coin to try and predict the winner.

Hopefully it should be a good game. Mayo-Galway games usually are free of the more negative stuff and that is welcome in this age of massed defences and cynical tactics. Mayo have never been able to play negatively (Horan's experiments with an extra defenfer against Dublin and London was disastrous and will hopefully be abandoned) and Galway showed with the U-21's this year that they are most effective when taking the game to the opposition themselves.

Certainly when they can win a bit of ball around the middle. Its always the problem with Galway. Finian Hanley is still unproven in the position. Galway will do well to break even, having said that Mayo struggled against London around the middle, with former Galway squad player Paul Geraghty lording it over his opposite numbers.
As a Galway fan I'm not too convinced we'll win, I think the Mayo game against London might stand to them. Then again these games tend to take on a life of their own.
Another interesting statistic is that Mayo have beaten Galway on the last 5 occasions I think, it could add extra incentive. The last time we beat Mayo in Castlebar was 2008. We don't tend to win their all that often, home advantage usually swings it.

Hoping for a Galway win. We've been on a downslide for years and a win would do wonders for our confidence. Unsure if the winners would beat Roscommon though.

a patchwork mayo beat a very strong roscommon lineup easily in february in the fbd

both mayo and galway are playing down their chances but knowing galway and mayo fans (as i do) whoever wins will be expecting not only to win connacht but go alot further, galway had an exceptional under 21 team this year and mayo are alot better than the london match showed, anyway i expect a completely different mayo lineup from that london game with 8 or 9 changes, i think home advantage and mayos extra scoring power might swing it in their favour but its hard to know with galway, i was in castlebar in 1998 when galway went there as major underdogs and won easily

whoever wins on sunday will be raging hot favourites with the bookies to win connacht (and rightly so), its been 10 long years since roscommon beat either mayo or galway in the championship and roscommon lost by a combined 36 points the last two times they played the big two

I really have been a bit out of touch with Galway football...that team wouldn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of those watching.

How long has Conroy been playing full-forward?? He's a good, skilful player.

And Finian Hanley at midfield...he's one of the best full-backs around imo.

And Bradshaw used to be a wing-back, didn't he?

But in general the forward line doesn't look very imposing. Bane is decent but not fantastic, I'd say something similar with Concannon. I have no idea how Bradshaw and Conroy are in their new positions but I can't see them as the type of players to rack up the scores from the play. Then Hehir at centre-forward...I don't know anything about him, he could be brilliant for all I know but we'll see and Padraic Joyce- a superb player in his day, he's still a great asset but not what he once was.

I see where you're coming from but Roscommon are the the dog. Hanley in midfield will be interesting to see as Galway have lost every single midfield battle in the last 3 years at least. I'm hoping for a good showing that could give some hope for the future.

What are you basing the Bane comment on?... the fact that's not a big name and was in and out of the squad under previous management?

He's always been a solid player who would get 3/4 points from play, has to be one of the most accurate distance kickers in the game and is fast becoming one of the best forwards in the country.

Its the team the Tuam Herald were touting to take on Mayo, from last week. And in general going on what I've been hearing it should be very close to what will be named. The backs and midfield I named there are almost certain to start. As for the line up of the forwards that may be slightly different.
    Fireball07 wrote: »

I think he was named there a few times in the league but I don't think he was very succesful there. I think he may have lined up further out. I expect if he's named in the full forward line that he will actually play deeper leaving Bane and Joyce inside. But knowing this Galway set up, I'd expect a lot of rejigging throughout the game with any of the forwards liable to line out in any position at a particular time.
    Fireball07 wrote: »

I agree but I guess the thinking is we have two good full backs in Hanley and Colin Forde. I really don't know about his ability at midfield. Its a bit silly playing him there if he only cuts an average player there if he could play better in the backs. We'll see.
    Fireball07 wrote: »

If he plays there I'd expect him to play as either a sweeper around the half back line or as a third midfielder. Probably the latter.

I agree but they're probably the best we've got. On the day I expect a 2 man full forward line with one FF withdrawing to half forward and a half forward playing further back again.
One major worry I have is the half back line. Gary O'Donnell has never been outstanding at wing back, as for Greg Higgins at centre back, it seems like a gamble. Sice on the other hand is a player I fancy.

I agree he is a good player, and at a time when we are struggling for scoring forwards, without Meehan and Armstrong, he has an important job to do on Sunday should he start. I think saying he's becoming one of the best forwards in the country is stretching it a bit. He may be the scorer of great points but he has nothing on the real quality players like Cooper, Brogan etc.

I said becoming.... there's a difference between emerging ability and established.

Anyway both of those are free takers and generally play in the FF line so not a favourable comparison.
Take them off the free's and put them out in the HF line where Bane kicks from and I'd say their scoring ratio would suffer.

And lastly both play for top teams who retain a lot of possession, Bane has only played for us since we have lost to heavyweights before the real business even starts, I'm sure his reputation would be 10times higher otherwise.

But what age is he? mid to late 20s I think.

The problem with comparing him to other half forwards is that they generally do a job that Bane does'nt do. He's no Paul Galvin either. I don't think he has been consistant enough over the years to warrant being regarded as anything other than a reasonably good player. He reminds me of Tannion for the hurlers, he shows glimpses of class but goes missing too often.

There's more to half forward play than scoring ratio, thats why the good teams have potent inside lines.

I've seen Bane play lots of times but he's never struck me as a top class player. Meehan and Armstrong have...but I'd have Bane down as decent, a player who will always hold his position but if he was missing it wouldn't be a massive blow. Obviously he's more importannt now that Meehan and Armstrong are missing.

I think he was named there a few times in the league but I don't think he was very succesful there. I think he may have lined up further out. That's fair enough then, I think he's a talented player, good player to have around the half-forward line.

I agree but I guess the thinking is we have two good full backs in Hanley and Colin Forde. I really don't know about his ability at midfield. Its a bit silly playing him there if he only cuts an average player there if he could play better in the backs. We'll see.

I suppose if he can win clean possession in the middle of the field it will be a help. But I wouldn't expect him to be the new Kevin Walsh either.

If he plays there I'd expect him to play as either a sweeper around the half back line or as a third midfielder. Probably the latter.

    Oh, again that makes sense.

Are players like Nicky Joyce, Matthew Clancy, Fiachra Breathnach still on the panel?

As for the defence, I suppose we'll see how they cope. Again, is Diarmuid Blake on the panel? I remember him being hyped a good bit a few years ago.

I think Mayo have to be favourites. You'd expect home advantage to swing it. however they do have many problems. They had something like 4/5 freetakers against London. Thats certainly not a problem Galway will have with Padraic on the pitch. It could be critical.

I'd expect three of four. Most likely to be Colin Forde, Jonathan Duane and Mark Hehir. Thomas Flynn should have a great future ahead of him but he's a bit young for the cut and thrust of Senior. Danny Cummins played in the league but did'nt impress, but then again he was'nt allowed to, being taken off after 20 minutes in the NFL league game against Mayo. Another player I would have fancied would have been Tomas Fahy but he since left the panel.

Hmmm.... Nicky is scarcely on the Killererin panel at the moment. Clancy is injured AFAIK and will be for a while, Breathnach still there I think, as is Blake. Don't think Mulahy is though.

Nicky Joyce was supposed to have packed in football altogether. But he came on as a sub for Killererin in a recent championship game. He is'nt on the county panel nor will he ever be again I suspect. He is a talent but I don't think he has the temeperment for inter county.

Clancy and Breathnach are still both on the panel I think. Clancy's stock has fallen substantially and he probably is'nt good enough for a start. Might make a decent sub if required. Breathnach is one of the 2005 U21 generation and never progressed beyond being a hard worker but is'nt good enough for inter county.

Diarmaid Blake was out injured for a while and is said to be pushing for a start. He is a great reader of the game but his lack of pace lets him down at times. Too many times have I seen the centre of the defence part like the dead sea.

Nearly impossible to predict this one. Both teams have been poor recently and from a Mayo perspective our last few Championship games have been a complete disaster so there's no way you can go into this that confident.

Don't expect too many changes from the London game tbh, the best we can hope for is that it delivered an early kick up the backside. Still, can't wait for it now, nothing like Mayo and Galway in the Championship.

To the untrained Galway eye, that does'nt look like a team an opponent would fear. I'm not sure about Donal Vaughan at centre back or indeed Trevor Mortimer at wing back (not a fan generally of forwards playing wing back). Not sure about the midfield, Aidan O' Shea is a bit like Galways Paul Conroy, a good player but not sure he'd cut it as a midfielder for Mayo, yet anyway. Having said that they are up against a Galway midfield that is equally unproven and is a sector where Galway have struggled for years. They'll break even.

The half forward line looks good and considering in my view at least that the Galway half back line is vulnerable, it could do some damage. Andy Moran came out of London with his reputation intact by all means. Two good skillful players in Dillon and Moran but I know little of McLoughlin. The inside line could do damage if they get good ball in, a lot will depend on confidence. Doherty looked a great find in the league, especially against Galway. I'd be guessing that O'Connor will be playing further out the field? or maybe he's reverting back to 1 on 1, 6 backs + 6 forwards. I don't know. He would seem to be a decent player but will he make the step up, it remains to be seen.
In terms of the Mayo full back line, I know what to expect from Cunniffe and Higgins, two decent corners backs at this level, but I know very little about the full back.

It looks to me like a transitional team with a mixture of youth and raw talent with some older heads like Mortimer, Moran and Dillon to guide them through. If I was a Mayo man I'd be patient, they might come good the next day and they may not. But what do I know I'm from Galway, a team in a similar position. :p Will be interesting to say the least, really looking forward to it now.

How is Aidan O'Sé in midfield lads?

I think its a bit experimental. He played there for most of the league (I'm open to correction). He's unproven at this level though. From what I heard he held his own against London but was'nt very imposing for a lad of his height. I'm not sure if he's totally built for it yet.

Any of Galway's under 21s likely to feature??

Colin Forde will definitely start at fullback, Johnny Duane will probably start aswell at corner back while word is that Mark Hehir will also be given a starting place, possibly at number 11. Danny Cummins may feature at some stage.

Looking at that Mayo team it team shouldn't strike fear into anyone, though Galway's lineup probably won't have Mayo quaking in their boots either, especially with Meehan and Armstrong out.

Id be cautious with that tactic. Very long waiting time for people last saturday in Tullamore to get tickets from a van outside the ground. Alot of supporters missedthe first 15 minutes. If you know you are travelling to the game for sure, get your tickets in advance

Roscommon are weak from midfield back. Even a poor Leitrim team (I cant overstate enough how poor Leitrim were) got in behind that full back line a few times for goal chances. I still think Galway will win Connacht.

He's been absolutely phenomenal at midfield for the club this year. He came on as a sub against London so its hard to take much from that. He wins loads of ball which is what you need from midfield.

Oh right. The only thing is its a big step up from club to county. Taking Joe Bergin for Galway for example. He's often won a mountain of ball for his club Mountbellew/Moylough but never made the step up to inter county midfield. He never won enough ball there. It'll be interesting to see how the O'Sheas do on Sunday. I predict they will break even. That would be a good return from an unproven midfield partnership.

Roscommon are weak from midfield back. Even a poor Leitrim team (I cant overstate enough how poor Leitrim were) got in behind that full back line a few times for goal chances. I still think Galway will win Connacht.

They're midfield would do well against either Mayo or Galway. Both have weak enough midfields. I'm not trying to build Roscommon up too much. It would be unwise to do so but looking at Mayo and Galway they both look frail especially in midfield and defence. They could well cancel each other out. I honestly struggle to see Galway winning Connacht.

    Connacht football is dead.

    The league matters not.
Not one Connacht player who would get on Cork or Kerrys team.

    The standard is disgraceful.

The league matters not? Who won the league last year? Who won the all-ireland last year?

Connacht is going through a lull at the moment but remember the success of the Roscommon and Galway under-age teams in recent times. Mayo minors have contested 3 all-irelands since 2005. Standards can only improve. If Mayo can get their act together they will challenge any team this year. They have already defeated Cork in the league.

There isn't a more exciting province around sir. It isn't a one sided championship anymore.
