Anybody know anything about getting replacement car keys online?

I'm looking for one for a Volkswagen Bora and I have the chassis number of the car etc, It's just that it costs 250e for a copy of the key in a shop here.

€250?That seems ridiculousy overpriced,I was quoted €170 for a key before for a Octavia.Recently got one for my s2000 and that cost €120

Yes it seems ridiculous, so looking for a good place online maybe? And what information do you need about a car to get the right key to fit and work?

Try a few locksmiths like Crothers Locksmiths in Walkinstown or Finglas. They cut and program car keys

The key itself comes in blank and needs to be cut - that's about €120 from a dealer. There are a few locksmiths around Dublin that can cut keys for VAG cars - probably another €20.

However, you then need VAG-COM/VCDS to program the key to the car. A dealer will charge a full hours' labour for this when it only takes about 5 mins (that's €80 plus VAT in most places).

I've heard of people on other forums buying VAG keys online and it's worked out well and much cheaper than the dealer. However, you do need the diagnostic software, or at least know someone who has it, to match it to the car.

Hmm so I would need to find somebody with this software, it all seems too complicated for a key, oh well.

You can but they charge about 400 euros or more. Try Adverts for a cheaper version of it...;)

Ah I see, a surprising amount of people selling it! Perhaps it is best to try your list :)

What do you need to now about the car when programming it? I am wondering what is entered.
    Thanks, you are very helpful.

Nothing really. If you get one of the lads on Vagdrivers to do it they will know exactly what to do. I never reprogrammed a key so I wouldnt know. There is a guy called Tossy that posts here and he is a expert with them.

Bought a new key on ebay for 25 sterling - blade uncut.
Got it laser cut for 5 sterling.
Brought it to a locksmith in banbidge, co.down and he programmed it for 25 sterling.
    Total - 55 sterling
Audi in belfast quoted me 270 sterling for a new key..........No

So I take it a lock smith wouldnt have the key and I should source one to bring to them?

    That's what i did.
I don't know if any old locksmith could cut it - the guy that did mine told me it had to be laser cut to make sure it was 100% perfect.
Worth doing for a saving of 200 quid!!

dose the bora have remote locking or not? do you have a working key for the car and just want a spare or have you lost the only key?

if you have a key and just want a spare it will cost about 100 odd euro. you will need a key with a blank blade and transponder like this if you dont have remote locking http://cgi.ebay.ie/VW-Blank-Uncut-Key-transponder-chip-Check-models-/190516910768?pt=UK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET&hash=item2c5bb15ab0

you then need to go to a good locksmith who will copy the transponder chip and cut the blade to match your old key. this costs about 80euro. well thats what it cost me when i got it done..

Thanks, it has remote locking, the key folds into a rectangle. Still have the key, want a spare. What key do I need if it ha locking? The key we have looks fancy :p

ya the flip key. i have one myself.. the cars dont come with a second remote locking key just one similar to the one i linked above. you could get a second remote key if you wanted. there are two types of remote locking keys, the flip one like you have and a non flip one similar to the one i linked above only with two remote buttons on it. http://cgi.ebay.ie/VW-SHARAN-GALAXY-2-BUTTON-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-/110704961308?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19c687a71c

flip keys sell for a bit more http://cgi.ebay.ie/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-MK4-BORA-PASSAT-REMOTE-FLIP-KEY-FOB-/320715486798?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aac21f64e

ebay is your friend but just make sure you buy a key with a blank blade and transponder chip. there are loads of cases for the flip keys on it so beware you dont buy one of them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

the key i linked in my first post will start the car and lock the doors manually just not via remote (cause it has none lol)

Thanks you're great, so I wouldn't have to mess around with the VAG software as it's just copying a key? And you do if you lose one?
Sounds good! Wouldn't want to buy a case by accident, ha!

will all those keys work on any volkswagon?
    thinking of getting this

the locksmith will be able to program the the transponder for you or you can just get them to cut the blade and get someone with a copy of vag taco to program the transponder..
And you do if you lose one?
if you loose the key and have no spare you have to go to vw to get it done and that will cost a bomb
Sounds good! Wouldn't want to buy a case by accident, ha!
    can easy happen!:D

will all those keys work on any volkswagon?
there are part numbers on the keys but most of them will work on most vw/audi/seat and skodas
if you have a two button flip key all ready this will be perfect.

this is how to program the remote central locking

to synchronize the key the following procedure must be used:
    1) both car keys the key with the radio transmitter (new key) A and the old key B must be used
    2) the synchronization process must be compleated in 30 seconds
    3) use key B to switch on the ignition and key A to program
    4) make sure the vehical is OPEN before you proceed to program the key
    5) place key B in the ignition and switch on (dont start the engine)
    6) use key A to lock the drivers door manually
    7) now unlock and lock manually the drivers door with key A while pressing the unlock button
    8) take the key out of the ignition

the chip/transponder has nothing to do with the remote locking. its for the imobilizer!
