I loved this book and was a bit apprehensive when I heard it was being turned into a film, as HW is know for ruining many a good book trying to turn it into a film.

But from looking at trailer I have to say I am excited about it. Casting has been done well and trailer has captured the theme of the book well.

Of course one of the UK daily rags are trying to start a campaign against the casting of Anne Hathaway, bit moot considering film is finsihed and all but then again what would you expect from a rag of a paper.

I will say if you are reading book trailer does give away one or two things that happen but if you have no interest in reading book give it a watch.
Also it is not the usual rom-com or chick flick alot more depth to it than that.

    Release in Ireland 26th August.

God, Anne Hathaway's accent sounds bad. Have to say I hated this book, but I'll still probably go to see it.

The book was practically a screenplay anyway.

It reminded me of a short story I would have written in school. I saw the trailer, which, to be frank, just gives you the whole plot in a couple of minutes.

I'm not really interested in seeing it but I may if the mood strikes me and it's on TV in years to come!

I was looking forward to the book but found it disappointing, didn't really like the lead characters so not expecting a lot with the movie!

I heard this from a few of my friends but I think that ok yes they had flaws, Dexter in particular had a few major ones but to me that made them all the more realistic.

Ususally in these books alot of the characters are perfect or minor flaws and everything is so easy but here you had 2 people who despite everything find love and mature as their lives progress and intertwines.

I can see why people dislike the boook though after reading it. Personally it is one of my desert island books.

I know, I just couldn't warm to them, so the ending didn't really affect me at all.

Well glad you enjoyed it, it's always great when you find a book you love!

I don't mind characters being flawed, I want them to be realistic, I just couldn't find enough about either character to like or care about, but that's just my opinion, that's why books are great and open to debate!:D

    Trailer

Besides Hathaway (not keen on her tbh), Patricia Clarkson and Jim Sturgess are always watchable

Liked the book a lot,so will probably watch it.I don't expect them to get the attention to period detail that made the book so funny though (The takes on 90's TV and 2000's suburbia is spot-on).

For the character of Emma, even while reading the book I always imagined Jessica Stevenson:

I mean, I always got the impression she was pretty, but not too pretty...nobody can really say that about Anne Hathaway!

Has no one seen this yet?

I thought it was alright, but that's only because I found the book simply horrendous so for me the movie could not have been anything but an improvement. But I did enjoy it a little more that I expected to, I have to admit (having such low expectations can do that!).

Anne Hathaway's accent was pretty dire though.

Disagree with you on the accent. She uses mainly a generic British accent with bits of Yorshire thrown in here and there but overall I have heard alot worse.

The main problem with the film is that it's just not developed enough and the format of the book just does not translate as well in to film.

Pity as the book is a great read.

If you hate the book as much as you said you do then you should have given the film a miss. As if you hated the original material that much it would be rare for the film to chnage your mind.

For sure, there has been a lot worse, but for what was supposed to be a Yorkshire accent then doing a generic English accent, and constantly slipping in and out of it, is bad, IMO.

In your opinion. I hated it - glorified chick lit with characters whom I found impossible to warm to.

Why should I have done that? I actually said I rather enjoyed the film. I have nothing against going to films of novels I haven't enjoyed (Never Let Me Go being another example) because, as I said, if I haven't enjoyed the book then sometimes for me the film can be an improvement.

I don't expect the film to "change my mind" regarding my opinion of the book. That would be nonsensical.

Saw this was on last night so gave it a shot. Like you, I was a huge fan of the book. While it certainly wasn't the sort of thing that I'd expect to have liked I found it compelling from start to finish and read it in a couple of sittings.

Unfortunately the film is a dreadfully hollow representation of it. The central 'twist' in the book was completely unsignposted, unexpected and beautifully written. A real punch to the gut. The film loses all the poignancy of the moment and, generally, the decision to keep the same narrative structure without ever stepping into the characters thoughts (a key feature of the book) simply doesn't work. While they are hamstrung by these failings of course, the two leads deliver stunted performances. There should be a lot of meat available for chewing in the respective character arcs but they never sell the highs and lows with any conviction.

I suppose I didn't expect much going in, but it seems a shame that this rushed cash in gets to be the film version.

Jaysus, I wished I was able to write short stories like it when I was in school!

Saw this last night too. Wasn't that impressed although it wasn't near as bad as I remember the reviews for it saying it was.

It's an interesting narrative structure but it's one that's very difficult to execute. I haven't read the book but I imagine doing this story as a book would allow you more room to explore the individual characters and build them up. In the film they're very two dimensional and it's hard to care about either of them. The small glimpses of the supporting characters were far more interesting to me and they all seemed like more likable or interesting people.

I don't like Anne Hathaway so I was off on a bad foot here. Her accent wasn't the worst English one I've ever heard, it wasn't Dick Van Dyke levels of terrible but it was all over the place at times. It was like she watched a bit of Emmerdale and thought, yep, I've got it and then just ran with it. It didn't bother me that much though because I just found her character to be dull and boring. I wasn't rooting for her to get with Dexter, I just didn't care about her. Dexter came across as pretty horrible and the only time I found him even slightly likable was when he was with Sylvie and the baby. So again, I didn't care what happened to him.

It's a strange one because I didn't think it was an awful film, it's watchable but it's not something you'd ever be invested in. If the phone rang in the middle of it you probably wouldn't even pause it.
