Feedback on unsuccessful application

Has anybody here ever asked for feedback on why an application was unsuccessful ?

Got an email on Friday for a new-ish pet shop franchise who I applied for a sales assistant job with to say that I was unsuccessful on this occasion . There not the first to say it.

I have a small feeling why (being young and having ''no experience'') but I would love to hear it from the horses mouth or email at least.

I also don't understand the fact that this pet shop is meant to be opening at least 4 new outlets in the next few months but the next two to open aren't even in Dublin and when I enquired as to when the Dublin ones would be opening I was told possibly before or after Christmas.

You can ask, I dont see the harm in giving them a call and asking why. They might be reluctant to put it in an email so I would go with a phone call.

I've had about a million interviews and only once did I get feedback, it was really nice and she gave me some tips on what I could do to improve my chances in the future. But in that case it was a qualifications and experience thing, so thats fairly easy feedback to give, its not like saying the interview went bad because I wasn't prepared or late, many reasons why someone wouldnt get a job.

Do you have any experience with animals? I worked in many a pet shop and its not really the same as working in regular retail. People will be coming to you with all sorts of questions about their pets, and if you were expected to sell animals then you would need to know how to look after them so that you can inform the customer. (not all petshops are this vigilant but the good ones are) I would say apply again for the new shops and buff up on the regular pets in the meantime, show enthusiasm for animals, maybe if you volunteer with animal shelter for a while. (not sure if you were looking for any of this advice but there ya go :p:p )

I've had lots of different types of animals in life inc tropical fish.

In fairness I don't see how working in an animal shelter would be of any benefit since its mostly dogs and cats that your working with :o .

    Any advice is appreciated :D

    Thanks

I've worked in the pet stop superstores and the small pet shops, a huge chunk of sales is on dog and cat food. Its the bread and butter that keeps the shop ticking over so it can provide the small animals, tropical fish and reptiles. Cats and dogs are the most common pets in my experience.

So any experience you can get in the care of these animals would help your understanding, it will also show the employer that your are genuinely interested. It might make you stand out from the rest of the cv's of folks who are applying.

I understand where you're coming from, I thought you meant animal shelter in a veterinary context.

Anyway I might ring during the week and see what HR says.

However again this all comes down to ''no experience''. And not just for the likes of pet shops alone.

You are entitled to ask for feedback on how your interview went.Any reply you get should help with how you approach your next job apllication. If,you've had an online interview-email them,telephone-then cal them. You'll probably the standard excuse, who knows.
