I'm curious to know what are your absolute favourite symphonic black metal albums, and also to possibly get a few ideas as well. Here are mine in no order:

Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice of Steel
    Old Man's Child - Revelation 666
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
    Ragnarok - Arising Realm
    Mactätus - Provenance of Cruelty
Thy Serpent - Forests of Witchery
    Graveworm - Scourge of Malice
Gehenna - Seen Through The Veils of Darkness
Cradle of Filth - Dusk and her Embrace
Hecate Enthroned - Slaughter of Innocence
    Sworn - Twilight

Good list there. The reason for twelve is that 10 is just not enough, and I just thought twelve would be better, because I don't think I would've been able to come with any more great albums than that.;)

Symphonic Black Metal, what a weird genre to be a particular fan of :P

I think this qualifies though, Sigh's last album!

and yeah I haven't wrote my 12 favourites because I doubt I've even heard of more than 3 or 4 :D

I dont have 12 favourite albums from the genre, because I've only really listened to Dimmu Borgir, and I love each and every one of their albums.

Is 12 the new 10 or something? ;)

Anyhoo, Borknagar are the only Symphonic BM band that ever really caught my ear. Probably because of ICS Vortex's vocal range, which is fairly impressive, particularly for that of a Black Metal frontman. Though saying that, Vintersorg is good too. The albums The Archaic Course or Universal might be good places to start.

I'd say if you love Dimmu Borgir then you might really like these albums:

Gehenna - Seen Through The Veils of Darkness
Emperor - Anthems to The Welkin at Dusk
    Graveworm - Scourge of Malice
Old Man's Child - Ill Natured Spiritual Invasion
    Ragnarok - Arising Realm
Graveworm - As Angels Reach The Beauty

Thanks, Ill check them out. I was in Oslo a few weeks ago at Dimmu Borgirs show with full orchestra and choir. It was recorded for a DVD, which when released will come with a huge endorsement from me!

That sounds like it was great. The new Dimmu Borgir album is actually very very good, and way better than the very patchy 'In Sorte Diaboli' which was a let down for me. I would love it if they ditched the orchestras all together and went back to the style of 'Enthrone Darkness Triumphant' and 'Spiritual Black Dimensions'. Those albums will aways be my real favourites along with 'For All Tid, Stormblast/Stormblast 2005' and to a slightly lesser degree 'Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia'.

Have you ever heard the bonus song 'Masses For The New Messiah' from 'Spiritual Black Dimensions'? It's a fantastic song, and an awesome bonus song too, it should've been on the album originally. I can send it to you if you want. just pm me.

I agree that the new album is far superior to In Sorte Diaboli. In my opinion there arent any weak tracks at all on it. But I dont think you'll get your wish that they pare back the orchestras. Shagrath's orchestral compositions have become a core part of their evolved sound, and they featured 4 orchestral scores at the live show. They are very impressive as standalone pieces of music.

It'd be great to have that bonus track! Thanks

    http://www.metalhammer.co.uk/top-posts/dimmu-borgir-announce-special-uk-tour/

" Dimmu Borgir will tour the UK this November and play one of their classic albums in its entirety, and YOU can help pick which one they choose!

Norwegian icons Dimmu Borgir are returning to the UK for their first proper tour on these shores since 2009’s immense, Hammer-sponsored Defenders Of The Faith trek with Lamb Of God! And, to spice things up, the extreme metal heavyweights will not only be playing some extremely intimate venues, but they’ll also be letting fans help decide on the setlist they play!

As well as a regular, hit-filled Dimmu set, the band will additionally play through one of their classic albums in its entirety – and YOU can help pick which one they choose!

“It feels great to finally announce more UK dates!” says guitarist Silenoz. “We have not only kept our promise about coming back after playing just one show on our last run, but this time around, we will also do a special 2 hour set. You don’t want to miss this! See you down the pit!”

The three albums that fans can vote for are:
    A) 1994’s ‘For All Tid’
    B) 1996’s ‘Stormblåst’
    C) 1997’s ‘Enthrone Darkness Triumphant’

The poll will be run via the band’s official Facebook page, and we’re also be hosting our own special poll on the Hammer homepage!

Dates for the tour itself are as follows:
    14 Nov 11 – Brighton – Concorde 2
    15 Nov 11 – Colchester – Arts Centre
    16 Nov 11 – Norwich – Waterfront
    18 Nov 11 – Glasgow – Classic Grand
    19 Nov 11 – Leeds – The Cockpit
    20 Nov 11 – Cardiff – Great Hall 2
    21 Nov 11 – Stoke – Sugarmill
    23 Nov 11 – London – Islington Academy
    24 Nov 11 – Nottingham – Rescue Rooms
    25 Nov 11 – Manchester – Academy 3
    26 Nov 11 – Birmingham – 02 Academy 2 "
