Hi I'm looking for help as I know very little about cars. At the moment I drive a Kia Rio 03 and although it's reliable and economical I would like something a bit more comfortable. I only have a short drive to work but I would do a 4 hour drive every month. My friend recently got a diesel passat which I have driven and loved but it;s a bit bigger than I need. But I do want a four door and a decent boot as have a little boy.
My budget is about 10,000 and I won't be changing again any time soon so want something which will last.
    Please help :)

With the short work journeys to work, petrol may be an option for you. Modern diesel cars can soon swallow up any fuel savings with the reliabillity issues they can have.

With that budget, you have a massive range of cars to look at. You would also want to be looking at no older than 08 really.

What mileage do you do per year. I certainly wouldnt be buying a diesel if only doing 12k miles per year.

You could look at ford focus, Skoda Octavia, Golf/jetta, opel astra or bigger cars such as mondeo passat etc.

Kia Ceed is a reasonable car too and maybe suitable seeing as you are a kia driver already.

Thanks Mick, had a look at the jetta online - looks very like the passat. Is it as reliable?

What kind of annual mileage are you doing? If it is less than say 18,000 then don't bother with a diesel as they don't like being driven on short trips especially around town and can become troublesome.

Great value in petrol cars these days as all the sheep flock to buy diesels to make small savings on motor tax and fuel. You could pick up something like these:
