Out of those three the Hyundai is easily the best buy, it has a long warranty, lowest mileage and the best engine of the three. It really depends on what exactly it is you are looking for, do you need a saloon car or will a hatchback be big enough? The 407 is in a different class to the other two mentioned. The Renault is a lovely looking car but that engine will be really gutless compared to the other two. Telling us what size car will make it much easier to think of other options!

    :)

I would actually like something more interesting, but with the way things are going, something that will last and cheap to run is probably the more sensible way to go. It could be a while before I buy again.

Saloon or hatch? I'm open to both as long as there is room in the back for 2 adults I suppose.

Engine size, well I'm not sure if it's much of an issue for me, as in the travelling I do is on back roads with very little opportunity for overtaking, so a gutless 1.4 may not be an issue. It would be rare that I'd get to really open up unfortunately.
I actually like the look of the megane but from what I've been reading here, reliability may be an issue, but I'm not sure if it's true for that model or previous models.
I've read mixed reviews about the 407 and I suppose I already know the i30 is probably the safest bet but I think very boring.

OP, take a look at the Kia Procee'd, its the same car underneth as the Hyundia i30 as Kia and Hyundai are sister companies. The Procee'd is a bit more sportier than the i30 and would have the balance of the Kia's 7 year warranty left.

Bill Cullen was selling 11 reg zero mileage Megane Coupes (Tom Tom edition) for 16950

Makes that 09 look a tad overpriced.

If you're driving mainly back roads the comfort of the 407 won't be beaten

Indeed, paying that for an 09 when folks got new ones for much the same on scrappage is madness.

    Just a quick question about 2008 Volvo V50 1.6 Diesel .

I know it lacks slightly in power, but my question is about reliability, if I were to get one can I look forward to years of relatively trouble free motoring if I get it serviced appropriately?

I just don't want to buy a lemon, I took one for a test this morning and it felt nice and I like the cabin.

Any opinions either way would be gratefully received...

It's Russian Roulette with new diesels tbh. Could be perfect, could have injector, turbo, DMF or DPF problems.

If I was buying a new diesel I'd want a lot of warranty left.

Is that diesel in general or a volvo diesel?

Diesel in general, the 1.6 in the S40 would be considered a very decent unit.

If you are driving short stop/start trips then you are going to have DPF problems with a modern diesel engine. They are not designed for that style of driving.
