Have a look at the KTM Strada 1000 maybe?
It comes in at €999 and the groupset a Tiagra/105 mix and Mavic rims with Shimano 105 hubs. Ritchey finishing kit too.
Worth a look, heard good things about the frame and carbon fork.

I'm aiming to buy the Strada 3000* as soon as I grab the funds.

    Strada 1000
    Strada 3000

*Only .1kg heavier and comes with better components than one of the more expensive carbon bikes.

Thanks was also looking at the following Giant Defy 2 and Trek 1.5

so between them all the price is the same but which is the better bike?

From a quick look, the Trek seems nicer than the Giant but the Ktm seems nicer than the Trek.
Now that's only going by components and the frame is obviously a huge part of what makes a bike good or bad.
All of these I've seen stocked in bike stores around Dublin. Bet bet is to go out, get on the bikes and decid for yourself which you like the best.

If it were me though, I'd have the Strada 1000 at that money.

KTM is the best of that lot but if spending ~€1k you should really be looking at carbon; I think the Focus Cayo is closest to that pricepoint at the moment. Yes, it is very much worth it.
