    Hi All;

Firstly, my apologies if this has already been asked and answered..I have be trying to find an answer, but am unable to do so.

I recently got a new netbook with windows 7 installed.

I use firefox for browsing and pegasus mail for email, along with yahoo and inbox

My question is, can any of you folk recommend which, in your opinion, is teh best free anto-virus software I should use. I hear various reports about AVG and windows own programme, but not knowing which is the most effective is a problem and I do not want to start surfing unless I am propely protected

Any help and advice would really be appreciated

    Thanks

I wouldn't agree with AVG any more. It became quite a resource hog a year or so ago and missed a nasty one for me.

    Avast world's No.1 anti-virus.

If you think that any anti virus software will give you 100% protection you are both mistaken and are likely to end up with problems, you also need to use common sense both when surfing and with links in emails.

As an analogy think modern cars have all sorts of safety features, air bags, crumple zones, roll bars, transmission control, ABS etc but you know that if you drive them like an idiot you will end up dead.

The same goes with computers, anti-virus will help keep you safe but won't guarantee it.

Every computer, I have cleaned for people, had up to date anti virus software running.

A Korean company called ALYac have free PC & Android versions of their anti-virus software.

Seems fairly good so might be worth checking out.

Microsoft Security Essentials is my anti virus of choice. It's perfect for a netbook as it's not a resource hog, and you wont ever have to deal with pop ups asking you to upgrade to pro, it will just sit there in the background and do it's thing.
AVG is a hog, and it will forever try and get you to upgrade to the pro version.

AVG, used to be the best, but not any more, and AVAST isn't much better than AVG.

Did you use Avast yourself and if soo what was it you didn't like?

I have good reason to speak highly of Avast.

My sincerest thanks to all who replied with advice and their opinions. It seems that the majority are in favour of MSE.

I have now downloaded it and (fingers crossed) it will be fine

    Once again, thanks all

Defiantly go with Avast and run it in sync with the latest malwarebytes and you should never have any problems.

Avira has been doing very well lately according to the reports at www.av-comparatives.org/. Although, for a netbook I'd go with MSE since it's the lightest on resources in my opinion.

Im a nig Avast user . but they have changed it. and now its in everything. but i still love it and her voice.

Be careful with AVG. i once downloaded a bug copy. from a similar looking website and everything and the programme ran the same just it caused viuss and let every p*ick in town in. :(

I used recomend avg free but I now believe its important that we don't all use the same antivirus. We had one malware that walked through the computers of nearly everyone I know. Each antivirus has its own weakness. Currently 4 computers in this house all run different free anti virus, when one computer has a problem there should be at least one clean one available to scan its hard drive.

Is running MSE enough to keep computer virus free?

As already mentioned, nothing is 100% effective. If you go full retard you will get riddled with malware no matter what.

But yes, MSE+common sense works well for many people.
