Getting to Southampton for a cruise

Recently back from a cruise that left Southampton, enjoyed it so much i doubt it will be too long before im making the trip again.

Travelled over land, ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard, drove to Southampton and parked at the cruise terminal. This is an expensive option, parking alone was about €100 for the week and i just wanted to see if there are anu other options.

Firstly flying is not an option so i wanted to see is there any overland public transport options available? I know that if your in the UK and want to travel to meet a cruise there are special busses that bring you direct and saves you time and money, for example saving you a drive from Edinburgh.

Are there direct busses from Dublin?

    Thanks in advance

No direct bus. How about sail and rail: Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead-London-Southampton. Train from London takes about 1:45.

Who did you cruise with? In-laws are on a RC cruise out of S'ton at the moment and their parking for the fortnight is free.

I was on business in Southampton recently when the volcano was kicking off in Iceland and disrupting flights. As a a backup I looked into trains and it's very doable. You stay well away from London and it's about 6 hours on the train with two or three change overs depending on when you go. The staggering thing is the cost at over £100 each way (per person). On top of this you have the price of a ferry ticket and then the transport onwards to your home.

    Thanks Guys.

We sailed with Princess Cruises, i know that some cruises can avail of free parking, we were not one of the lucky ones however.

Sail/Rail is an option. However i thought maybe if there was no direct bus, take the Eurolines Dublin/London and get a connecting bus in Victoria?

You could take Eurolines to Victoria, but it's a horrible trip, especially in the summer. I've done it once, and once was enough. At least you can walk around a bit on the train.

Yeah i have had the misfortune to make that journey a few times, its certainly grueling but the price is right!

Personally speaking, getting to Dublin port, then on a 2-3hr ferry, then onto a 4hr train journey, then another 2hr train journey, then a taxi to Southampton port, lugging baggage every step of the way....well that's no way to start off a holiday

If you got the ferry to the UK you might be able to catch an eavesway cruiselink bus to Southampton. They definitely go from Liverpool and Swansea so if you live in Cork or Dublin you could get the ferry directly and catch the eavesway bus to get you the rest of the way. My honest opinion is that it might be more hassle than its worth because I'm not sure if there would be a huge saving from doing it. You often can get parking in Southampton for free with Princess and P&O esp if you are either booking quite early or last minute. Also if you are staying in a hotel nearby in Southampton a lot of them do cheaper parking deals.

There's one company I know that has some cruises leaving directly from Dublin and they also have special coaches to go from Dublin to their UK departing cruises, they are cruise and maritime voyages but I have no experience of them so can't say whether they would be good or bad but just something you could check out I suppose.

Where did you cruise to by the way, did you enjoy it? :)

    Thanks Mimi,

It was 7 days, Southampton, Guernsey, Brest, Vigo, Lisbon, Southampton. Incredible trip, while Brest and Vigo were not showstoppers, overall the experience was fantasic.
