NCT- Failed retest for things that passed previously

I had my first NCT test two months ago and the only failure I had was for a fault with the airbag light on the dash that gave me a lot of problem to fix. I eventually got it fixed but as it wasn't bought back within a month I had to do the full retest yesterday.

The guy I got was a real stickler and failed the car for
    1) One of the back doors doesn't open. This passed fine in the last NCT and the one before that two years ago.
    2) A mount for the gear stick needs replacing. This was a problem pointed out to me by my mechanic five years ago when I bought the car but was told it was safe to drive and would be fine. This was the first time it has ever been picked up at an NCT.
    3) A few other minor things that I don't have a problem with.

Can I just go to another NCT centre and get the full test redone or will they have my records on file? I'm pretty sure it would pass for these as it has done so before.

As far as I know, they can't fail you on what you passed in the initial test. They are only supposed to examine what was failed.

I could be wrong though, might be in the fine print somewhere.

They only check the fails if it's within 28 days anything after that and it's a full test

I guess they're not being as leniant nowadays with small issues after that whole "Primetime" thing

It failed for legitimate reasons so unfortunately you will have to get them fixed. You may have gotten away with it if you brought it back sooner. Best chalk it down to experience OP.

True, but it's just annoying when they weren't picked up before and they don't have anything to do with safety which is what the NCT test is about. I would love to give it another full retest in a different centre to see the difference but would like to know if they can see my original test results.

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh out loud! For your own sake, get the car repaired - stuck doors and tired gearbox mounts are important.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

All doors need to open. This is very clearly stated in the NCT manual. I know this from experience :D

So lets get this straight. You are driving around in a car with a faulty gear lever mounting for five years and you don't see a problem with that  The non opening rear door is a safety issue because it may end up being your only exit from a crash situation and be the difference between life and death !!
It appears people do have to be protected from themselves after all

If the mechanic says its fine I see no problem with it.

Must be one hell of a safety issue with a 3 door car then:eek::eek::eek:

In a 3 door car the front seats quickly fold all the way forward. On a 4/5 door car they do not.

If something was wrong with my car and a mechanic told me "it's fine" I'd be going to a different mechanic in future. I'm a plumber and the amount of other plumbers, as well as electricians and other tradesmen I've come across, including mechanics, that have a very laissez-faire attitude towards various aspects of their job as well as just being plain wrong about a lot of things would shock you. I dotn know everything about plumbing , just like mechanics dont know everything about cars, but what I wont do is make up some crap about something I dont know about to keep someone quiet.

EDIT. Actually just copped the bit neilboard mentioned. a 5 year gap could well absolve the mechanic from my scenario. It's probably not "fine" now.

What makes your mechanics opinion more valid than the mechanic doing the NCT?

Above you said the mechanic said it was fine 5 yrs ago. Do you not think it would wear some more in the five yrs, seriously! Somepeople:eek:

I had the Soarer in for its test at the start of the month and it only failed on 1 lower ball joint on the rear drivers side lower control arm.
new part wont ship till the 2nd and retest is ment tobe done before the 3rd.

in the full retest if they pick up on something ill get that fixed aswell.
but i never got the hole if theres something wong ignore it till the NCT or the car stops working ?
if somethings broke and you know it why not fix it ASAP ?
