Do RTE or Sky have rights for this? Are Celtic bringing a first team or a XI team?

Sky have the rights to it...close to the start of the season so i reckon strong squads.

What crowds are expected? Its clasing with the GAA Quarter Finals. I wonder who will win that marketing duel.

Who wants to go to a friendly? Seriously:confused::confused: I havent missed a home League game in years and european nights are special but I never never go to friendlies. They are simply pointless. For mugs only.

Pointless games, pointless tournament that will only serve to further entrench the beliefs of Premier League fans that the Airtricity League isn't worth bothering with.

In fairness, I don't think Pats will have anything to worry about ;)

Obviously not basing that on anything really?

Its also the situation, that if the AL XI win a match, its because its a pre-season game and if they lose, you get the response like you mentioned. Its a lose-lose situation for the League.

These tournaments like 99.99% of pre-season games are lame.

No reason to think this one will be anything different.

    From a LOI selection follower......

Keep the score against Inter and Man. City respectable.

Hopefully they can beat that Celtic team. With the Rovers and Sligo players I would be pretty confident. But without them would be hoping for a draw at best.

See Sky advertising this as one of their highlights of their summer season.

    Cancelled.

Then why are you posting in a thread about them and wasting your time on something which is good for the FAI and potentially some players who'll perform from the LOI select

That is the most deluded post I've ever seen, expect the LOI to be walked over in every game.

It really depends on who is in the quarter finals, and what double headers are on.
Some years the quarter-finals have been very well attended, other not somuch

You man get a drift of Northern GAA fans deciding to go and see their other love, Celtic, rather than their country in Croke Park

Definitely, all to do with it being a LOI select rather than an actual team though. If an actual club was participating I'd go along with applehunters post.

The Airtricity League team don't have a chance because 1. they're not a team they're a group of players and 2. all the best players will be playing in more important matches in European competition.

This tournament has "goonfest" wrote all over it.

You've not been around these thread much in the past then, have you?

I think the team will likely be something like this

    Cherrie
    Madden--Hawkins---Greacen---O'Brien
    Brennen---Dempsey---Molloy---McClean
    Quigley
    Zayed

Can't see a team like that being anything but hammered by Celtic and Man City

Anybody who has attended friendlies down the years knows that one of the top teams in the league would have every chance of keeping it respectable or sneaking a result in a friendly especially against visiting teams who aren't that bothered and who are only just back from their summer holiday.

Putting together a random XI and that fact that the overwhelming majority of LOI supporters won't be caught dead at the games will nearly guarantee a bad result for the home team.

In fairness if i were a LOI player id relish the chance to play the likes of Inter, Man City, Celtic and United in a 55 thousand seater stadium.......would be some experience for them.......as oppose to playin waterford united in the rsc!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Celtic's domestic season will have already started by the time this tournament comes around. They wont be caught cold although we dont have a decent goalkeeper but surely that will be sorted for the start of the season.

If I were a LOI player I'd like to be insured if I got injured in one of these games

So is anyone actually going to any of these games?? LOI followers I mean...I'll be there, but that's only because I work in Lansdowne Road

If there's a ticket bought for me and free transport I'll go to one. Not wasting me money on a ticket and a train up to that shíte.

Given that Waterford aren't in the top flight this isn't an option that any players hoping to play will have to choose between
