Anyone fancy throwing their ears over this http://snd.sc/kh2bah its a re write of a Rory G song I recorded at home. I've only ever recorded small ideas. This is 1st time doing a whole song minus vocal, will be doing vocal next week. Could do with another pair of ears to listen out for things that might be lacking / too much etc. Trying to get my head around levels and eq effects and so on.

Gear I'm using is not great, 50 euro Stagg drumkit using floor tom as kick and playing bass for 1st time, hense not expecting too much just to have tracks and overall song as tidy as can be when recorded at home.

Any tips / pointers would be great, cheers.

I think something went badly wrong in your mastering. The mix fills the Soundclound thingimy - but it sound really quite. Like there's something swamping the low or something - it's nowhere near as loud as it should be

I like the guitar playing - I think it sounds really good and has a good feel to it.

Everything else is coming through really too low.

Really like your guitar playing. Has a really nice ragged feel to it
now if it only could be louder. I think you've got to clear the mud out.

    Eleven would be good.

Nice one thanks. Never mixed before so I guess it shows. Its just as hard as playing if not harder. I'm having trouble uploading from the VF16, I just send it into line in on the computer and hit the record function on computer, guess I'm knocking the levels this way? I'll pop up another mix during week, try and lift the others. Cheers.

i think the bass and drums are getting lost in the mix same as above. i think a bit of eq on the bass especially as i it seams to take up a lot of space try rolling off top and some bottom it will leave more room for the drums. depending on how you recorded you could tighten up the kit and do some panning as well. i like the guitar.

Thanks. I uploaded a 2nd mix with vocals, not great mind you. I downloaded Audacity to help tidy the signal so the levels should be good. I only had 2 mics on kit as overheads so not a lot of options. This is the best I can come up with so far, will come back to it later and have another go at vocals. More stuff to record so I'll touch it up as I figure out more. Have a listen, let us know if its any better, or worse. http://snd.sc/isFEiN

    I like it.

    But it's still wrong.

You're losing everything to vvwhoomy boominess. There's an empty boomy sound overlapping things. When you overlap, you don't get the best of both worlds, you get neither of either.

You need to brutal and cut back on the frequenciences for each instruement. And it doesn't have to be the same for each instruement across the entire track - some sections the voice should be up and the guitar dropped way back - different situations, different things.

Cut anything (in Frequency) that you don't absolutely need.

I really love you're guitar playing.

Thanks, back to drawing board so. I hear you, I can create a few scenes to bump or drop levels where needed. I have to re do vocals, would be better to sing higher or pull back on guitar during verse's that might work. I've moved onto another song so I'll bear all this in mind, cheers for your help. I'll do a another soundcloud clip soon, see if I can improve. Thanks again.

Keep experimenting. A higher vocal will cut through the guitar - but that guitar you have going has lots of harmonics swamping the mix. Which is fine in parts but swamps the mix in other parts.

But - I don't think you should try equing the guitar the same through out the mix. And it's good for things to go away - so they can be welcome when they come back.

If you listen to this you'll see how much the guitar presence can change throughout a track

Cheers. I hear what your talking about. To break up the guitar sound for different parts means I'll have to do some overdubs. I was hoping not to go down that road, playing straight out start to finish with no fluffs is good practice before heading into the proper studio. Might look into overdubs on the stuff at home later on.

I made a big boo boo on that song. I recorded the two drum over heads onto one channel times two meaning I was trying to mix 4 overheads. I've much cleaner drums now that each mic has is own track. Should have something ready early next week.

One triplet, two triplet, three triplet http://snd.sc/iWZeVp check it out. This is the other song I'm working on. Sounds lot cleaner than last song. I did'nt go near eq just slight bit of panning and touch of room effect on guitar and thats it. As I listen back its close to the sound I have in my head, press record and just play type of sound, no frills. Bass might be too high in the mix now that I hear it on different speakers.

Have to re do drums, things changed on guitars by the end so some drum parts not right. No vocals have'nt them all worked out yet. Let us know if its any better, any suggestions welcome. Cheers.
