Good read indeed....Read the title of the thread and my first thought was that sometimes I wish it would lose its appeal as its bloody all consuming at the moment !! :D

Its the same over here, apparently most member clubs are down on numbers each year for the last 3 years and many in financial trouble, golf club joining fees seem to be unaffordable to the majority just now.
A club I was previously joined are down over 30% of their members and they spent borrowed money foolishly before the crash leaving them with about €300k per year less to repay it from the subs along with what those members would have spent in the club throughout the years, this makes it even less attractive for any new potential members to join as down the line levies to repay the debt may have to be considered, and I am told numerous other clubs had similar stories. A nearby club spent a few million on a clubhouse recently, apparently with borrowed money also, and a declining club membership, and few know why they built the clubhouse at all, other than to show off what a fancy clubhouse they have...that they can't afford.

Good article but I think for me anyway, the delight I get when getting through a whole round without losing a ball is special.

As for declining members, I think alot of this can be rectified with a good marketing strategy from the gui to get people involved after all the less people playing then the less they get €50 from each of them.................
