I've recently just moved to the country in the last couple of weeks, but I was sitting down watching TV last night in the dark when I noticed the sensor light over the garage door come on. I looked out the window to see a young fox cub standing there looking around. I was amazed as I have never seen one so young. I was just wondering if anyone knows much about their behaviour? I am keen to get another glimpse but what are the chances of this?? Do you think he was just passing through or do they tend to roam the same areas again and again. I was thinking about leaving some food out tonight to see if it might draw him back????

Leave food out but keep your interaction to a minimum with him. Put it at a good distance from the house. They are creatures of habit so you can be sure it will be back esp if it means getting an easy free meal. Just remember that no matter how nice it may be to try encourage it to come closer and closer, it is a wild animal and should be left as such.

Thanks for the reply. I would never try to interact with it. I would simply like to get another look, that's all. I know some people consider them a pest but I think they are lovely animals.

If you want to feed it, Lidl sell really cheap dogfood. I buy the big bags of dry food and mix it with a bit of sunflower oil - it's good for their skin and can help fight mange (apparently). A few peanuts thrown in go down well too. I don't think feeding them too much is a good idea, they could become dependant on you. A small snack will do. I bought a cheap IR camera on ebay that hooks up to the TV, so I can watch foxes and hedgehogs coming to feed after dark. It's real reality TV!!!

You will probably see it again even without feeding it, they are creatures of habit. I see loads of them around me at night (Dublin suburb) each time checking houses in the same pattern.

Young foxes love dog food and milk, keep plenty out every night and try to get closer to it each time. Eventually you can look forward to an affectionate pet. :)
