    Let me guess.

Cohen puts on a silly voice and uniform and creates scenarios where it causes the audience to cringe at his childish-like stupidity?

I thought this was a remake of Chaplin's The Great Dictator for a second.

There's a reason they omitted the word 'great'!

Love SHC and hopefully this will be a return to form after the so-so Bruno

Trailer was only going ok until the scene with the sprint at the end, even typing about it makes me laugh!

That trailer gives away a few plot points; namely the "Coming to America" twist - but, it looks like something I'd enjoy!

I wasn't so impressed with the first trailer, but now I think it might be worth a watch.

    When is it out?

hah looks pretty funny from trailer 2, not a direction i thought it was going at all

I like! The parts where he's working in that shop had me laughing. 5 years in retail, I think they captured the essence.

had a few chucklesome bits in that trailer, can't imagine the line "why not visit the Empire State Building before you or one of your cousins takes it down" going down too well in America :pac:

So it's a proper movie and not a documentary type thing like Borat? Interesting..

His general, Said, looks an awful lot like Sir Ben Kingsley ... wait a minute!

Didn't think it looked good based on trailer 1 (race sequence notwithstanding), but trailer 2 does a much better job. I'm looking forward to it now.

    +1

I enjoyed Bruno and loved Borat so I would have always gone to see it but I was allot happier after the second trailer.

The 2nd trailer does look a bit better.

The race sequence is still the funniest part.

Looks awful, I'd say all the best "gags" are in the trailer", his stuff only really works when people don't know who he is, this will be more "Ali G In Da House" thrash I'd say.

Anyone see week his skit with a kidnapped Martin Scorsese on Saturday Night Live?

Agreed, though I did find Ali G In Da House giggleish at times, I much preferred the Borat/Bruno approach.

    Slightly disappointed now :(

Didn't realise this movie was simply a standard 'fish out of water' affair; seems like an excuse to have a more scripted version of Cohen's Borat/Bruno characters, rather than anything more interesting & new from Cohen. A comedy taking the micky out of a tinpot dictator sounded like a potential hoot; the newest trailer ... suggests it won't be.

Yea I was dissappointed when I saw the new trailer, getting lost and no-one knowing who he is makes it look a bit more formulaic. I thought it could be potentially funnier if he remains a power hungry dictator for the duration of the film. Could still be funny though.

    Red-Band Trailer:

I doubt it's going to win any oscars, and you can already tell from the trailer where it's going; but, I actually like the look of that...

At least the bits where he confronted genuine homophobes were good, this seems to be totally scripted.

Have to say im a fan of Bruno and Borat and think this looks brilliant aswell, ok its completly scripted but it would be pretty hard to do a dictator based film to proper scale and have people believe it along with his fame now and that hes well recognised everywhere hed go.

    Looking forward to seeing this.

Great clips with Anna Faris, i really like her. Kicking the boy in the back was great. Asking the cop for $20 mil :pac:

Is that lady who calls him a 'very nice man' one of the dinner guests in Borat?
In fact I'm fairly sure she's the one that calls him a 'very nice man in Borat!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

Borat was a classic and Bruno needs watching more than once as the expectation was too much. There are some brilliant parts in Bruno like him interviewing kids parents for a lovely role and when he camps out with red-necks trying to sneak into Donnys tent.

The Dictator looks like an actual movie - all scripted. It lacks the rawness of his previous flicks. Personally i dont like the look of it as SBC's real attraction is not him, its the reaction of the people he is dealing with.

Saw this tonight at special screening, Have to say I really enjoyed it, it's very offensive of course but most of the gags are spot on. Also a
    WTF cameo from Edward Norton

Some of the standout scenes were the
'milking' scene and the zipline scene. "I don't trust the promotional information" lol

Went to see this tonight, have to say i havent laughed so much at a movie in a very long time, wasnt expecting it to be as good as Borat which still cracks me up now, but have to say it was better imho :D Plus I love Anna Faris, didnt disapoint in this role either! :)
He really pushed the barriers with some jokes in it, which i thought was incredibly awesome and hilarious :pac: will go see that again, loved it!

Some good reviews , probably give it a shot after my initial cynicism.

Was at the preview last night.
    Ridiculously funny.
Havent laugh at a movie so much in years

3 good reviews right there. I'm raising my optimism. Anyone else see it?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 7,441 Mod ✭✭✭✭XxMCRxBabyxX

I'll add in my approval. Was also at the premiere. Found it very funny, wouldn't go as far as funnier than Borat, but the film was full of loads of clever jokes and hilarious moments. I would defo go back to see it again. I'm still laughing at some things!

    Red-Band Trailer:
From the looks of that trailer I won't be going to see this. I enjoyed Borat but I didn't find anything in that trailer remotely funny. Looks too scripted and a lot of dumbed down mass market american humour

Its not a mockumentary like Borat/Bruno was, its a conventional film with a screenplay, of course it looks scripted.

Went to see this tonight. To be honest if you've seen the second trailer (restricted) you've seen the film. Didn't find this film good overall (although it does have some good moments) and felt it was a waste of a tenner to see it.

I liked Borat, and thought Bruno was watchable enough, this is poorer by a long distance. A film about a Dictator had the potential to be witty and clever satire, this is not that kind of film.

Unless you really like SBC "humour" then I would give it a miss.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

Very poor movie. Dumb humour abounded(and that's coming from a fan of Will Ferrell), no genuinely funny moments and the only real comedy was poor one liners(whether spoken or visual).

As a scripted story based comedy, the story provided sweet f. all comedy and it lacked the comedy from interactions with real people that provided the laughs in Bruno/Borat.

    Very, VERY strong avoid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Phoenix Park

Thats a pity its getting poor reviews. I thought the second trailer released looked great and was looking forward to it.

Can anyone help out with this one, trying to book specific seats for three guys at the Savoy (Dublin) on Saturday for this, but want to pick seats by the aisle (don't ask!) :) The phone number for the savoy is automated so can't get an answer there, is there any way to choose seats if booking online (doesn't seem to be to me) or is being given specific seats a thing of the past and would it be best to just buy online now and show up early.
