I had a sole trade, which i am now changing into a limited company.
My wife will be the 2nd director in this new company, i will own all the shares. She will take no wage from this company.
I will take a significant wage.

My wife has stamps from working (PAYE) last few years, but got let go early last year, she was on dole for a while, then got some work in december, but thats now finishing.
She wants to go back on the dole again now when her work finishes.

The question is, can she be a director in the new company and then go back on the dole?

When I went to business school many years ago, one's spouse could not be the second [and only] partner in a company.

When she reapplies for the dole, your income will be taken into consideration. Do let me know how you get on.

I've fallen flat myself in the last year and my wife has been unable to get assistance because of my self employed status.

The vast majority of private limited companies have husband and wife as the 2 directors?
I believe that dole is only means tested if my wife doesn't have the required stamps?

Do remember that to get JSB/JSA it is nescessary to be be available for and seeking work and to be able to prove this.

I don't believe it is possible to direct a company and be unemployed at the same time.

Interesting question raised here . Playing ' Devils Advocate ' were I the SW official dealing with the application in these circumstances I could insist the applicant take a wage / directors fee from the company and thus negate their need for assistance ?

Or, if the company is eligible (which I doubt, considering the opening post), the company could take the woman on as part of a work placement programme, which offers her no wage, but allows her to keep any benefits or allowances she may have been entitled to.
