DMP Remix Competition ROLL CALL.

Okay, few people have asked for a competition, and it all king of came together...

I've asked a fairly important shop in the industry in Ireland to provide a prize, i'm still waiting for a reply back from them as to what the prize will be, but i'm sure they'll get back to me in time. I'm not expecting the prize to be massive(no moog little phattys) but it's all about taking part and having fun.

a member of the board has provided the material to be remixed, and i think the source material is so original, that the remixes will also be great.

    http://soundcloud.com/dogs-the-band/movement

The above sample is the song/track that will be used in the remix comp, i feel it has the right ammount of original parts, melody and vocals to be used to create something really good.

I'm gonna give a pretty ample ammount of time to complete the remix, i know a LOT of people here have other stuff they need to look after first before attempting this, so i'd say 4-6 week should be enough time to allow.

So, for the minute i'm just taking a roll call to see who'd be interested in taking part, when i see there's enough interest, i'll chase up the shop about the prize, and i'll lay down some proper rules and deadlines on the judging! :)

Cool, yeah count me in if it's 3 weeks or more time to get the entry in

Same as above. Would be interested but would also need a reasonable amount of time to get something together.

Let's have some warm ups first.

We could have more of a discussion about the thing before we get going.

I think to go away and work on our various individual blancmanges for two months might not that productive or fruitful.

We're all more or less amateurs. To me, the prize is to come out of it less amateurish. Learn from what I'm doing, and from what other people do.

In recent months I've fallen out of the habit of finishing things. A few warm ups might get me back in.

There's a few more things I'd like to say but for the minute - I've got some kind of infection and my head hurts like hell. So I need to go take some pain killers maybe 3 litres of pain killers.

i'd prefer to get straight into the remix. we had loads of warm ups with jazz earlier this year or last year.

red dave..........well I need a fff'ing warm up ... And I'm sure a few other people do too.

And - in case you didn't know. Fruity Loops is the weapon of choice for the UK hardcore community. I don't use it myself - those who do, can get very impressive results.

you should go through the old remix threads to warm-up?

I was just thinking most of us only have limited time to spend on this so would be better to go straight for the remix with a PRIZE

FL has been my weapon of choice since i started producing. I meant the blasphemy to Carl for calling it "****ty" ;)

This is the dance music production thread, perhaps it'd be better to remix a more "dance music" track? That one sounds a bit MOR guitar-ey to me.

    +1

It would be better practise to do a remix of a contemporary dance track and keep it within the same genre rather than to do something like this.

Also it should be given in samples rather than midi parts cause thats what you get 99% if not 100% of the time.

When you are asked to do a remix its usually a given that it has to suit a certain style of the label that is asking you to do it.

Without being too cruel to the track put forward i think it is pretty lame and i cant see anything interesting coming out of remixing it.

There are a lot of producers on this forum that are on the verge of getting their productions to releasable quality, so why not encourage them by giving them a bit more of a realistic/practical task?

I certainly understand where you guys are coming from but wouldn't agree myself. I'd have thought just to do a dance remix of any tune whether it's a rock anthem or some indie song would be a good challenge?

Whatever the final track is I'd be up for it regardless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,945 ✭✭✭Anima

Hmm I'm easy either way but leaning to the side of having it more directed a little bit.

The track itself isn't bad but there isn't much to work with really. Which will lead to people just making anything and then what is there to judge if everything is completely different?

Better to have lots to work with initially, a specific genre or similar to aim towards and then it'll be much easier for everyone.

I'd like to work on the track posted and leave it open ended tbh. The track has enough going for it and flexible enough to do anything you want with it imo. It would be interesting to see what everyone brings to the table in terms of a remix.

Sorry for my lack of reply here as of late, had a crazy last few days, i wont bore you with the details ! :)

As Romarr has pointed out, he's offered a fairly cool prize...so i think it's worth having a shot at it.

If people arent happy about the track not being electronic enough, that's the fun in remixing...everyone has a free reign on how they want to do the remix, so everyone get to work! :)

Romarr and I are the judges, as i personally don't know anyone so i won't be biased!

We'll judge each remix on a sacle of 1-10 an the remix with the higest score wins! :)

I'll be working away on this over the next couple of weeks. Cheers

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,793 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

Just go for what you feel it, be it a jungle remix, hip hop, techno or give it a Trance style vibe....

I'm going to be giving my marks out of ten on originality, quality, playability and production content!

That would be my aim. To get my productions to the level they are releasable.

ZedJay's competition was really good for me. It didn't take me all the way there - but it did get me closer to producing contemporary releasable stuff that cuts the mustard.

It was really home work excercises - the pain in the ass stuff everyone has to do - but it was more fun when there was a "competition" - a group activity thang. I learned a lot from what I was doing, and from what other people were.

I don't know if I'd get the same from everyone going off for 6 weeks and working on undanceable blancmanges.

In my opinion, it's not about the winning, it's not about the taking part - it's about people uping their game production wise.

I'm still going to run with this competition, as it is! Have some ideas that I'll think about a bit more over the weekend and run some future competitions with tracks from a specific genre.

I just felt that the lads from Dogs were offering a great prize, it'd be a shame not to run with it.

You know, people can chew gum and walk at the same time.

A few little exercises may not be a bad thing to engage people and get them more active.

Why, what was the prize? Maybe I missed it. I've read through the thread and I didn't see what it was.

I think though, the real prize for people would be to come away less amateurish and with more production skills, to take their love making beyond their bedroom walls (I was using a metaphor there - making music is like making love to a beautiful woman)

Aye, stick them up and link here would be the best. I might stick mine up this evening as well. I was going to try another mix but I won't have time over the next couple of days. I have some tweaks to make and then I'll horse it up.

    That's really good.

But - I think you used too much of the vocal, without a break. It would've been nice to drop some of the vocal for sections here and there to let the music do its' thang.
