The excuse used by people when encouraging you to do these, is to gain experience to get a job in the long run.
So I went for a few, because I was bored of sitting at home doing nothing, and I wanted a job.

Applied for two, and got letters for two.
Both of these letters said these exacts words:

'We have reviewed your CV and unfortunately you do not have the experience we are looking for in this position.'

It was my impression that you done these things to GET experience...wtf?
It was only for secretary/receptionist job, and I have had experience in both customer care, and I have ECDL....

Bit peed off that it is even hard to work for free....

Unfortunately OP there are far too many people out there at the moment who do have the experience.

But that's what I don't get.....if you have experience, why do you need to do WPP to GET experience??

But the WPP is there to enable people to get experience. That is it sole function. The two programs WPP 1 and WPP 2 are there to help people with no experience and graduates with no experience to gain some knowledge of an area to get a leg up for when the jobs market improves.

Unfortunately this is just being abused by employers to get free labour. That is the new ireland for you...free labour.

OP, I strongly suggest you give a copy of those letters to your fas office and hopefully they'll act on it. Also scan them into your computer and send them on to your local TD's.

    This sh!t has to stop.

WPP is a bit of a joke -

Like the OP, qualified people are bored on the dole too and want to geet some work and when they apply for free work they are miles ahead of graduates -

Shocking cause qualified people should be paid and shocking cause grads that need experience cant get it!!!

Agreed that it is a joke, and having got it, I would be losing more money every week....but I was willing to do that to get away from the insanity of doing nothing every day.

They just don't make it easy do they, cannot get a paying job, can't even get a non paying job....They have told me I can't do the FAS course I want.... Can't do ANYTHING. Catch 22 with these people.

I am doing one and frankly I would be able for most of the manager's job, better at some parts of it. But I took the chance and I making more contacts so hopefully it will get me into a proper position but really I shouldn't be doing it. Theres 100s of people who are more deserving of it.

WPP is the biggest joke. i was on the FAS website for my area the other day and firstly i think there was ONE job that wasn't WPP on there!!! ONE  now on the WPP thingys you apply to the FAS generally, not the place of employment, and the FAS pass them on. so you can't always see who is looking for free labour work experience people. one of these on the website the other day was for a SHOP ASSISTANT in a supermarket!!! FFS:eek: supermarkets using the WPP to get someone to do shop assistant job free for 6or9 months makes my blood boil

The rules for WPP need to change as it is a good idea "in theory", but in practice it is slave labour in a lot of the positions. Fas should not let very entry level positions up like service station attendants, toilet cleaners etc because that is not going to give you any advantage in getting a job after it. Also I agree that the company itself should have to pay some money to the WPP candidate (even if it is only a small bit, any more than the dole for someone is an incentive though)and any position saying x no of years experience should never even make it to the fas website and that company blacklisted from the WPP scheme. But in all fairness......its Fas running this scheme, what more did you guys/girls expect :P look at the track record, lol

I would suggest that this position would require an experienced person to carry out the duties as outlined and therefore should never have been allowed onto the WPP list. In my opinion it is a classic case of someone looking for free labour. Well done to the OP for posting this example

From the IT company in question (who claim they made €1 million profit in their first year) on their website:

"In 2010, businesses need to cut costs right across the world. Decisions are being made to consolidate offices and reduce expenditure in all aspects of business."

They believe that "delivering people over the internet means rather than having expensive in-house IT departments, you only pay for a portion of engineers and use them only when you need them."

But it seems there are some things that can't be done via cloud computing ... so why not 'employ' someone to do these chores for nothing

Seen one of these WPP's on FAS while job hunting. It was a for an admin assistant in UCD.
How can they expect someone to work in the office for free while 1 in 10 UCD staff are on over €100,000, including one who is on more than a quarter of a million per year. Really makes me angry.

The FAS call centre is 1800 611 116. So if they are abusing it, call them. They do have checks before the ad goes up, to make sure they're not displacing workers and they try to stop it being just used for free labour.

It's not compulsory, so if you don't want to do the job, what's the problem? It might be right up someones street to get experience in a supermarket or as a cleaner.

Are you for real? You think somewhere like Tesco should be allowed take people on for free, who exactly wants to gain experience as an unpaid cleaner?

I dont know why people get so annoyed a WPP - if you dont like the job then just DONT apply for it - I know a few people who have got a lot of experience from it - none have been kept on but they all benifited from it.

If you can't see the problem with profitable companies taking on free labour that is paid for out of your taxes then theres little I can say to convince you otherwise. Except to say that free labour entering the marketplace doesn't just exploit those who choose to do but also undermines people working in industries where internships are used quite a bit and will result in salaries falling. I am doing a WPP job and I have 2.5 years experience in the field as well as two level 8 qualifications and various other certs. Im sure it won't do me any harm but its probably harming the jobs market.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,692 ✭✭✭Jarren

The reality is that WPP1/2 and other work related schemes do not create full time jobs.
Nothing wrong with all those schemes providing there is there is a job at the end of it.
If the experience you are after - get unpaid internship (I've done in the past)
if the job you are after - don't take any WPP1/2 schemes

Not sure about the newest National Internship Scheme either

    Let's wait and see

And there's the point.... Why waste your time and money for nothing, when you aren't guaranteed a job?
Like, if the company had no intention of taking any of them on, why bloody do it????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

I think if employers had to give the person a job after they had satisfied certain criteria then there is some value in it but as it stands there is nothing from stopping employers taking on another set of interns after the first lot have finished their term.

WPP is utterly discredited by now . Just look how many positions look for a level of experience - the whole idea of WPP was to give experience to those who did not have it !
There was a recent post by someone whose wife and her 8 co-workers had their hours cut by 4 hours each per week ( 9 x 4 = 36 hours ) and a week later the same employer was seeking someone to fill a WPP position for 37 hours a week. That is just 1 example of WPP displacing real jobs.

FAS is a thoroughly discredited organisation given the revelations over the last 2 years , how could they possibly be trusted to police the WPP scheme ?

WPP can be converted to the National Internship Scheme

down the line I can see them being offered to people on the dole and then this applying:

    http://www.herald.ie/national-news/burton-slashes-dole-for-jobless-who-wont-work-2629338.html
THE jobless face cuts to their dole if they refuse to take up work or training offers under a new crackdown.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton is to introduce new rules where people on unemployment benefits will face financial penalties for the first time if they consistently refuse to take up offers of training, education, or course placements.

I applied for a WPP1 a while ago for a marketing position. I was dumbstruck with the response I got back from the company. It went something like this: "Dear Randy Shafter, thank you for your interest in this placement programme. However, we are currently awaiting more CV's to come in and will be in touch in due course." And that was 4-5 months ago. So much for getting back to me...
