I'm not asking about getting a gun license. I want to know that when I get it, where can I go hunting? Near Dublin. Like a bus somehwere.

my friend you need to get permission from farmers before you can get a license, could you not just go there when you get it, i dont think it's a good idea spinning around on a public bus with a rifle or shotgun in tow
    to be honest

    Hazlittle,
Have you any relations that are into hunting?

Have you some spare cash? You could always hire a guide or go to a gameskeeper.

    Are you experienced in shooting?

If you are new, maybe shoot paper first then targets.

Otherwise, you could offer your services to farmers to help cull bunnies/rats (22lr), foxes (223), or deer (;)).

    Just some thoughts.

Or find out if there's a gun club local to your area and get talking to some of the lads in it. Most are only too happy to help out. And I agree with Fitzy, getting on a bus with a gun will only draw unnecessary attention on yourself!

you need to go knocking on doors asking for permission mate and as already said getting on the bus with a firearm wouldnt be a great idea!!

Mainly because it's illegal under the Road Traffic Act 1964...

Speaking of guns on bus's , My girlfriend was on her way into work last saturday mornin travelling through town and she noticed 6 lads down the back of the bus dressed in full combat gear with machine guns (airsoft guns) the lads werent causing hassle or anythin they were sitting quietly or whatever and were on their way out to wicklow for some skirmish thing, its a wonder they were let on the bus at all. To get to my main point, back in the day I remember my grandfather would be looking for lads to shoot foxes and rabbits etcetera on our farm, I was obviosly far too young. so in return for some vermin control he gave some lads from the city permission letters so they could get a license. They used to come out every saturday and spend the whole day shooting. I remember specifically they travelled by bus to the local village and brought the guns also. they were locked in a secure travel box and placed in the luggage compartment of the bus.

How is it illegal to take the bus to go shooting. That doesn't make any sence. Sure you can take a boat or even a flight with your rifle/shot gun.

If you have a license to carry a gun to and from where you shoot and you take the proper precaution then there is no problem

Boats and aircraft aren't covered by the Road Traffic Act though...
And don't assume that the law follows common sense. Or even that what's common sense to you is actually common - everyone here is used to firearms, knows a bit about them, and as a result, our idea of common sense doesn't match up with everyone else's.

We've mentioned it a few times before now, but this thread is probably the one that got the deepest into it (the specific references are about half-way through the thread).

I think if it was in a rucksack or plastic case in the storage compartment under the bus where you can't physically touch it, that would be ok but I wouldn't like the idea of someone having a firearm in such a confined area. Just my 2 cents. SPARKS what happens if a clay pigeon club want to hop a bus to a competition say in the UK, how do they get their guns there

I've no idea how this works in the UK Spunk84. And the bye-law that bans it here doesn't care where on the bus or in the taxi that it's stored. And yes, it's a monumentally stupid part of the law that there's no exemption for licenced firearms.

But then, it's not the only - or even the worst - such mess in the Firearms Act...

Haven't done it myself, but I believe the firearms in both instances are separated from the owner and other passengers on both modes of transport.

Yes of corse the firearms are in the cargo hold but you can travel the length and breath of the globe but you can't get a bus to the airport. That's just crazy.

Yes & no. Shooting just isn't mainstream enough (I know that' a funny statement with the number of licenses) to warrant the security measures on public transport like busses to carry firearms. At a minimum I'd want a locked cabinet for firearms on a bus, even then personally I wouldn't be all that happy.

With planes and ships AFAIK it's crew only access to your locked case. I don't think Ryanair will carry firearms at all.

you're right ryanair wont allow you to travel with a firearm, and on other airlines its up to the pilots discretion wethere they want to carry it or not.

On the same point the fast ferries wont carry them either, only the steel-hullled slowboats

    +1.

I will speak from my own personal first hand knowledge here.

I have traveled numerous time with firearms, ammunition, and components across the Atlantic from the US to Eire. I am legal and licensed on both sides.

I have not flown Aer Lingus in a while. You will have to check the carrier.

I am allowed to check one piece of luggage with firearms, I forget how many may be in a hard case, but I have brought two. Quite a sight at arrivals when they scan that case - in front of everyone - you get some looks .

Additionally, you are allowed to bring 10lbs of ammo. They have actually weighed it.

You must declare firearms, ammo, or any piece of a firearm as a firearm.

Thanks for tips. Maybe going to farmer about shooting rabbits would be the best idea. Currently I just have an air riffle. I can hit a 2inch target at 20m. There are rabbits near me. Might/probably will go into the field at night time.

first thing i'd do is go on nargc website and look up some profiency courses in an area close to you,you dont have to be a member to do the course but there is a fee.while there speak to some of the people organizing the course and ask them about local clubs in the area and get some phone numbers and also speak to some of the lads on the course im sure some of them would be willing to help you out

    That's just Ireland!

I'm assuming this doesn't apply to privately rented buses? Just public transport?
