    hi all,

im just wondering here, I got acceptance letter for doing a course last Friday. On Monday, I went to SW Office with completed BTEA form. The girl who served me accepted + checked the form, made a copy of my acceptance letter. Then she said when I get another letter from college confirming the start date and that I am attending a course, I have to bring that letter to them so they can start the process of my BTEA.

Because of the queue behind me and Ive noticed that some SW Officer do not appreciate if someone asks too much or takes up too much time, I couldnt ask this:

Because my partner is claiming for both of us and Im the adult dependent, I now have to make a new separate claim for myself (informed by a SW Office when I asked about my eligibility for BTEA). Should I start the new claim process now or "start the process of BTEA" means start new claim when I get another college to confirm my attendance.

I am just thinking if that letter comes very late, say in August, and my course starts in mid Sept, will there be enough time for them to process my BTEA at all?

I hope my questions make sense and someone with similar experience can help me. This is my first time applying for BTEA and I would like to know how things are done properly.

    Thank you very much :)

You should start your independent claim now. It takes time to process with all the usual documentation again and the inspector's visit etc., but your payment as dependant adult should continue until your independent payment comes through. Best to get on it straight away. While you are in the process of that and going back to the SW office for forms etc., be sure to regularly check with the BTEA person about your claim for that - alway get names of the people you talk to about it (note the names in a notebook in front of them, along with the information they give you) and ask for a letter to be sent to you confirming your eligibility for BTEA pending receipt of the letter/s from the college giving the start date and confirming you are in attendance.

If your partner is claiming for you on their claim, and they would qualify for Back to Education, you don't need to have your own claim. You can qualify based on their claim. They will set you up on the system when you start college - you don't need your own claim prior to that - you just need to continue to be paid on your partner's claim.
Of course, you can always open your own claim if you are looking for and available for full time work.

    hi cee_jay,

before I applied for a course, I went to SW asking for my BTEA eligibility. My query was answered by a lady who said, yes I am eligible and when I get an acceptance letter, I should go to SW and make a separate claim for myself. So that is exactly what I done once I got an acceptance letter.

My partner made a claim a month before me, and when I went to make a claim for myself, the woman told me, oh u can be in the same claim as ur partner's, ull get the same amount anyway. and when we were allowed JSA, obviously it wasnt the case. not that im complaining, honest. I just thought they'd know what they r talking about.

however, im still going to SW tmrow, I have to be sure what needs doing. prepare to hear different answer from them.

    thanks for the reply
