Gibson Acoustic Guitars

Will be in the unusual position of coming into some money shortly and although I've only been playing for a year or so I've decided to spend it on a guitar.

Now I've decided that I'd like a good acoustic. My favourite have always been the stones and I particularly love their country/blues stuff (country honk, sweet Virginia etc) this makes me want a Gibson.

However, I'm not an experienced player and don't know a he'll of a lot about guitars, so I wanted to gauge peoples opinions. Are they worth the money? Do they still play/sound well, any gibson owners out there?

I have a Gibson songbird deluxe gibson01542046.jpg that I love. Bought it in Boston. Always wanted a gibson J45 or a hummingbird but any of them I tried in the store I didn't like the feel of.
They will have a higher resale value though if you ever want to sell.
Try before you buy...some great deals out there at the moment. I think there are a few nice looking 45's on adverts.ie. Bring someone along with you who knows a bit about guitars before you buy. :)

That's a cracker fingers, a real beauty. I suppose the thing that worries me is the negativity you see online toward Gibson these days, just want to make sure they still make quality instruments.

Have also noticed that they seem to charge an extra 500-600 bills for solid back and sides, is this worth the outlay?

Id have no problem paying the extra if it was worth it. With a bit of luck i'd be handing this guitar down to someone in the far off future!

I tried a J 45, which I really wanted to like, a while ago but was ultimately pretty disappointed. Overall it just sounded dead to me. I wasn't a fan of the super sticky nitro either, but that's just personal preference, I guess.

In that price range I'd definitely go looking for a Martin D-28 or HD-28. It's a distinct guitar playing experience but I've never played one I didn't like. It's a classic model as well so you can definitely hark back to your old honky tonk music with it as well.

Gibson do make lovely acoustics but I feel they are a bit overpriced. Taylor and Takamine are also very good. Just make sure you get a solid spruce top, decent tuners, and make sure the action isn't too high. Best thing to do is to try it out first. You can get away with buying and electric over the internet but acoustics should really be played first before you buy.
