I shortly want to paint 2 or 3 coats white paint to whole house. House is new build and plaster is now dry.

What is best approach? ie type of paint (water down or not?), pva or not, how many coats? are you best leaving the final coat until 6 months to allow full plaser to dry?

Also what are people thought on Spray v Roller?

1 Do not use pva on your walls or ceilings!
2 You dont really need to thin your paint for first coat.
3 Three coats will be more than enough.
4 there is no need to leave the walls for 6 months, once the plaster is dry for a month there is no problem finishing it.
5 spray application gives a much better finish, also saves a lot of paint.

I would not recommend you attempt spraying it yourself,as you could do some serious damage with a sprayer if your not experienced using one.

Currently checking out spraying for a new build ( fresh plaster is well dry, no joinery installed).

How many layers on the wall & ceiling (walls will get a coloured coat at a later date)?
Are there any paint brands that give better results?
Are there any additives that should be added?

Give the walls and ceilings two coats. dulux supermatt will do the trick. No need to add anything!

On this...anyone give a ball park figure for a 2 storey 2900 sq ft house...2 coats of white on all ceilings and walls (including the cost of the paint)

I know I haven't provided enough details for an exact quote so just looking for a ball park figure (e.g., €1000, €2000 etc.)

Michael, it looks like you are involved in the painting trade?

It's just that I was talking to a rep from one of the large paint companies recently, and he said that you must water down the first coat of paint....

Now, when I painted my house, I didn't water down and there was no problem!

    3100 sq ft house.
3 coats on ceiling, 2 on walls.
Sprayed in 2 days for €700 incl paint and all coverings etc
    PM for details.

That's a very good price. I've just got a 3200sq ft house (incl attic space) with only 2 coats on ceilings and 1 on walls for €750 all in.

im in the same boat, painting new house. Have watered down berger as first coat, and will use crown brilliant white as 2nd coat. Might use dulux as final coat. What are the chances of a reaction happening with using different paints?

Painting is around €6.00 (Materials & labour) per m2 so you could work it out like that. Add about 5% for contingency to the final price.

Some people thin the first coat, some dont. I find there is more substance or body to the finish colour if you put 2 straight coats on. Never had a problem with it myself.

I can understand Some people just find it easier to use if they thin it a bit.

Leyland and Johnstones (and probably others) do a paint specifically for new plaster which still allows it to breath and dry. The Leyland one is call Super Leytex and Johstones is Johnmat (i think).
