22 priests were at the funeral of Brian Lenihan, I heard on RTE today. Is there not something strange about that in this day and age?

    What's strange about it?

Well I'd expect at least one for the ceremony, but having 22 might be pushing it a little

D15 is a very large area and lots of parishes

    It's not strange at all

They could have just been in attendance to pay their respect, while one of them conducted the service. Kinda hard to know what the case was without a source!

I will also refrain from what I was going to say regarding saving his soul. Instead, I shall say that at least he isn't suffering any longer, and his family is at peace.

I imagine its a bit like a Mafia funeral, everyone has to be seen to be there.

D15 doesn't have 22 parishes, it has one of the lowest mass attendance rates in the country.

That 22 excludes the ones that took part in the mass delivery.

It's as if he died in the 1950s with the number of priests going.

Did all the Fianna Fail TDs turn up as priests to continue their holier than now act

It's not that strange really for a public figure, if it was a member of the public it would be strange. They were there to pay their respect and it might bring his family comfort if they were religious.

Standard practice, they're substitute priests,on hand in case the actual priest pulls a muscle while administering the sacraments.

It's not unheard of to have a couple of priests at big funerals-there were about three or four for my grandmothers.... but 22? To help with communion etc. I dunno, maybe more showed up than planned?

There was 1000 people, so probably more than 22 teachers, 22 solicitors, 22 guards etc etc there as well.

    On the subject of priests/religion,

Why was Brian Lenihan buried in a Chruch of Ireland graveyard? I thought he was catholic?

Didn't know he was buried already. And they're still doing an autopsy on the economy.

He was, and catholics do get buried in Protestant graveyards all over Ireland.

Something to do with the Good Friday Agreement. All our ex government ministers have to be buried in CoI cemeteries for the next 50 years and all the Unionist ones have to be buried in catholic cemeteries.

A weird one alright but anything to keep peace on this fair isle of ours.
