Northern Lights - Norway

    Hi,

I was thinking of going to Oslo at the start of September and I'd love to see the Northern Lights. Has anyone done this before? When is best to go, where can you see them etc. The flights on Ryanair are dirt cheap, but as for Oslo itself, what's it like? Myself and some friends, all in our early 20s are going, is it a vibrant city? Any personal tips of places to go or things to do would be greatly appreciated! Especially with the Northern Lights part!

    Thanks!

you can still go to Noray and just get an internal flight to a city like Bodo with Wideroe airlines. Or you could take a pre-arranged tour there are travel agents in Ireland who arrange it Im sure.

oslo is too far south to see them, you need to go north of the arctic circle and probably a little later than september, oslo is perfect for connecting flights to northern norway though, its about 90mins flying time to tromso, which is ground zero for viewing the northern lights, you can check prices from oslo to tromso here http://www.norwegian.com/en/

Do a search OP, it's been discussed many times. All the info is there.

We flew into Oslo and got a train as far as Bodo(where the line ends) We then got a boat from there to Tromso and rented a car and went up as far as Hammerfest. We had great views of the northern lights there. Of course you could also get a plane too but its you prefer to see the country also this is a nice way to do it. not too time consuming took us about 3 days to get there. There is also a place called Alta, which you can get really nice views of the northern lights. It would be a bit dissapointing to plan your trip around seeing them though as there is a chance you may not. Scotland is also good for seeing them and not too far away so could also be a good place to visit.

September isn't really a good time to see them either, think the best time is from November to Febuary.
