Da Vinci?

Hi all. This is probably a 'doh' question, but here goes... Was looking at a bike make called Da Vinci in LBS - seemed very nice to me that knows nowt about bikes. I then went looking for reviews but I cannot find anything on the net on this brand. This particular bike was pretty light with a carbon fork and tiagra groupset and seemed good value.

The chap reckoned that I should worry less about the brand name and more about the components (carbon fork, tiagra, race wheels), which he claimed were above average for a starter bike.

I'm a bit concerned that I cannot find reviews of the brand on the web, and thought I'd ask here for some expert opinions... anyone heard of the brand or have any advice?

Tiagra- Above average for a starter bike! hmmmmm well you cant go a lot lower then Tiagra
IMO its the other way around to what he said. A decent frame will serve you well and the components are all upgradable/changeable.

Possibly you spelt it wrong and its devinci bikes

    http://www.devinci.com/home.html

    Is it on this site?

I've never heard of the brand and although Tiagra is a decent groupset I suspect it'll have a mix and match of some tiagra and some own brand.
Depending on what you want it for it may suit but it would need to be well priced.
Personally I'd be very reluctant unless it was well under €700 new and even there there are better options for a few quid more.

Tiagra is fine. Mine gives me no problems. My legs let me down more than the Tiagra does.

It was definitely Da Vinci. Could see no reference on the net to the brand. This is all new to me. Was also looking at a giant defy 4 for roughly the same cost but it was significantly heavier. The shop guy reckoned the giant was lower spec but cost the same due km premium brand name. Now obviously I am new to cycling but I was thinking of doing Gaelforce and wanted road bike for It. Any advice appreciated...

As an ex-pat, I have to speak up to defend a Quebecois/Canadian company. If the bike you are looking at was a Devinci, not Da Vinci, then it has a decent pedigree. Devinci isn't very old, but they've got quite good market penetration in Canada, and I have friends who had a pair of Devinci cross/touring bikes and loved them.

My guess is that your LBS has a bigger margin in the spurious brand as opposed to a more mainstream one (Giant, Trek etc) so I would take his advice with a pinch of salt! I would steer clear of a bike that no one has ever heard of until you can decide for yourself on it's pros and cons!

It is definitely Da Vinci, not Devinci. WHatever about margins and that, my own instinct is to stay clear of that which I cannot find reviewed on the web. Appreciate the advice.

FTIW the Giant Defy is a good solid bike and the frame is well suited to future upgrades.
I'd go for that even with a substantially lower spec.

Had an entry level da vinci about 15 years back and have to say that I was not impressed at all. Compared to other bikes I found the bike to be seriously heavy. The bikes were sold dirt cheap though so I guess you get what you pay for.
Personally, I would not buy another one regardless of components/price.

would Da Vinci be the name of the bike / line of bikes rather than the brand perhaps

stay well away from Da Vinci bikes, waste of money in my eyes. I had one up to a year ago; i had it for 6 months numerous problems with everything, cost me more on the bike to get repaired than the bike was actually worth. i had to upgrade to a giant defy 3, brilliant bike, go for a known brand alot of better deals on bikes out there nowadays. In my view that is. and btw the frame is as important as every other componant on the bike, if not more.
    regards,
    BL
