There's a thread over in photography started by a person who took photographs of Dublin from 50 years ago and replicated them as best he could this year.

The reason I'm posting a link here is that there are so many cyclists in the old pictures. I find this especially interesting in light of the recent attempt to paint the increase in cyclist numbers as a scourge on the city.

Bikes and cars looked better in the 50s.

And that spike is the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

Green buses. Nice. I don't remember them being green.

And the number of cyclists waiting at the junction of Dame St and South Great George's St!

I remember them being green up to the mid '90s. It seems the livery changed in 1995 based on the pictures on this site.

were green back then, then became an awful beige/orange colour. In 87/88 when Dublin Bus was formed out of CIE they became two tone green with an orange belt stripe and then, as above changed again to the blue and beige and white, orange and blue

He's done a graet a job of replication and the clarity is amazing .

Below is a youtube video I made a few years back with the same photos

Really enjoyed that post. It was amazing how many cyclists were around the streets back in those days. So many people used bikes as their main mode of transport in and out of the city. I'd say there was very little bike theft back then.

Dublin looked much nicer back in those days I think. I'm not from Dublin but seeing comparisons between old and new has always been fascinating to me. Great job by Paulw.

The buses were green again for a while in the 90s.

When I lived in California in the mid-90s, my Irish girlfriend of that time often ended up trying to explain to her new Californian friends what Ireland was like, but they frequently confused Ireland with England. One friend made a joke out of being sceptical that Ireland was much different from the view of London she had gained from movies.

She said, "I bet the only difference is that in Ireland you have GREEN double-decker buses and GREEN pillar boxes".
