New Job

I'm due to start a new 4 month contract job on Thursday or Friday and am currently getting JSA. I just had some questions.

Do I need to inform the social welfare that it's only a 4 month contract and I'll probably be reapplying in 4 months time or can I just sign off online?

When do I sign off? The day I start work?

Seeing as it's in the middle of a social welfare payment week if I went to the post office next week would there be a half payment for me?

Finally I'll be paid monthly and not sure when I'll first be paid. I heard you can go to the community welfare officer as I'd need money for rent, food, bills, etc. I'm moving into a new place this week so would I go the the community welfare officer in my new area or the old area? How do you pay back money to them?

    Regards

Sign off on the day that you start work, or alternatively let them know in advance the date that you will be starting work. No need to let them know its only for 4 months. You will have to make new claim when it ends, although it will link in to your previous claim. Also, as you will have accrued more than 13 PRSI contributions, you may find that you re-qualify for Jobseekers Benefit at that time.

You will get a final Jobseekers payment for the days of unemployment up to the last day before you sign off.

If you are stuck before you get paid, you can apply for an urgent or exceptional needs payment from the community welfare officer, this is a discretionary payment. It is not a loan and is not repayable as such, although if you have another social welfare payment pending (eg, FIS), it can be considered to be payment on account and deducted from any backdated payment due to you.

Any application for an urgent or exceptional means payment should be made to your local health clinic.

Do you have any dependent children? If you do, then check out entitlement to FIS, and also if you are receiving a payment for a qualified child, you may be entitled to keep this portion of your JObseekers for 13 weeks as a Continued Child Payment. See here for further details http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/ccps.aspx

If you are getting rent supplement, it is paid in arrears and can be paid in respect of any time up until your first date of payment from the new job (or 30 days after starting work whichever is shorter), so you should still get your next month's rent paid.

    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/OperationalGuidelines/Pages/swa_rent.aspx#4.4
4.4 Payments to People not Retaining Rent Supplement when Taking up Employment

A person who is not entitled to retain Rent Supplement on taking up employment through the methods outlined above may continue to receive payment of the relevant supplement for a period of up to 30 days after starting work or until such time as he or she first receives remuneration, whichever is the earlier.
