A good LED Lenser flashlight, lighter, spare mobile and camera battery, paclite rain jacket, penknife with scissors, thermal long sleeve vest (covers all weather situations), sun cream (1 tube), baseball hat, clip on 1 litre water bottle, small first aid kit, and last but not least imodium.
if you have the capacity, bring a netbook and chargers for all electrical (or get a multi charger).

Second the flashlight, rainjacket, suncream, hat (any type you like really - I took a small sombrero), water bottle, first aid kit. Some sort of blister pad (like compeed) will be very useful. Imodium probably won't be necessary unless you're travelling in the Balkans or Ukraine/Belarus.

Other than that: a towel, a toothbrush and a box of condoms!

    Why the flashlight lads?

Campsites, unless you're staying 4 star. Always handy when lights are not available or turned off at night on trains and you want write or check maps etc. Also good for checking the bottom of that bag!

Have one of these "shaky" torches: http://www.maplin.co.uk/shaky-flashlight-388290

You shake them for a few seconds, and you get light for a few minutes - no batteries needed.

Useful for going for a poo in the forest, in a bathroom where the light is missing or doesn't work, in an unlit portaloo at night. Camping is fun, but you need a torch! Also useful for when you drop money or anything really at night.

Good idea for a thread! Anyway know from experience are you more likely to bring more clothes than you need? Heading away in July for a month and not a clue what to bring! Cheers

ps-im a guy so don't intend on bring a rake of clothes!

I'm going to bring a memory stick to back up my photos in internet cafes as I go along. Before I leave, I'm also going to scan a copy of my passport and other travel documents on to it.

A travel wallet you clip around your waist for when you're sleeping, you don't want your cash/cards/passport sitting in a bag in the overhead compartment.

Besides all the on-target stuff mentioned above, a toilet roll and a tube of showergel/handsoap is totally useful. You often won't find either in certain places. You can pick it up in a shop wherever you land first.

    Your own plastic fork/spoon.
Dry foodstuffs are handy as well, for either longer journeys, or for arrivals at night when shops/restaurants are closed.

Insect repellent: especially if you are going north. Depending on where you are inter-railing, immodium could be of use to you.

I always bring my own pillowcase when roughing it. It can be useful if you are in a questionable hostel, and also then serves as a bag or for wrapping stuff etc.

If your phone is crap, don't forget a notebook and pen to take down names, info, contacts etc.

    Emergency cash or credit card.

And don't be like my friend who got his wallet stolen in Serbia.

Friend "My cash and bank cards were in there."
Me: "At least you've got your emergency credit card you keep bragging about how well prepared you are".
Friend: "That was also in my wallet."

I've heard a sleeping bag liner is a big plus-prevents bed bugs and all kinds of nasties. Plus you don't have to worry about sheets being clean etc. I'm also bringing a pillowcase for the same reason and gonna look for a very secure pilllowcase and keep me valuables in it so I don't get robbed..

every bed i slept in was freshly made and spotlessly clean!

i had a sleeping bag liner and i tossed it somewhere near prague. waste of time, effort and space!
