    Hi all,

Just need a bit of help, not too clued up on cars and bought an Opel Vectra 2nd hand a while ago. Its a 98 model and in the last day or two the attached warning light has come on. Don't have the manual so was wondering if anyone could let me know what this indicates? It doesn't seem to be the battery I don't think as there is another light for that.

    Cheers!

    Check Engine light

The ECU has detected something going out of whack somewhere in the engine, has kept the information for itself, and told you that it has it. It will only tell what it found to a very nice mechanic who will charge you a few quid for the privelege.

Unless you buy your own reader.

Cheers mate. Looks like I will have to take it to a mechanic so.

    Is it a diesel?
I had a 97 one of those a few years back and the engine management light used to come on every now and again. If I remember rightly the manual said that it was normal for the light to come on intermittently. A bit strange but the previous owner told me this also and if you google it you will see others saying the same thing.
I remember it used to come on following hard acceleration and stay on for a while.
I never bothered too much about it and put over 200k miles on it before I sold it.
I suppose if it is staying on you might want to get it checked.

No it ain't a diesel! The light actually came on before and went off but it's there the last two times I have driven. Might give it another few goes..

It may be possible to read the fault code(s) using a paper clip to short two pins in the dianostic socket to enter diagnostic mode, and then counting the number of flashes given by the MIL / CEL / whatever you wanna call it light :)

I'll check my notes later to see if it can be done with this car, and if so, what the procedure is.
