Does anyone know what are the criteria for claiming back motor tax.
My tax disc will be up on the 12th of Sept '11, but i may be exporting my car soon and hence off the road.
Can i claim back the last 3 months tax?
    Thanks!

This is the form you need. Its the one i used when an old car was scrapped. Not sure if it works with what you want to do. Ring your local tax office tommorow.

Actually looking at the form there is a section for car export.

Your tax can't be due at 12th Sept. I may be 31 August or 30th September maybe...

If it to the end of September, then you can claim last 3 months back (July, August, September).

    Question 10:

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=faq

10Q. Can I apply for a motor tax refund?
10A. Yes. You can apply for a refund on your motor tax if your vehicle has been:
Scrapped or destroyed by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)
    Stolen and not been found
Sent out of Ireland permanently, e.g. sold abroad
Not used in a public place because you are absent from Ireland for business, educational reasons or with the Defence Forces.
Not used in a public place because of owner illness or injury.

There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc for a refund application to be considered. All applications for a refund must be made to your local Motor Tax Office, irrespective of whether you taxed online or in a Motor Tax Office. In order to apply for a refund you need to complete an RF120 form. This form must be witnessed and stamped by a member of An Garda Siochana. This form is available at your local motor tax office or can be got on our homepage under the link 'Motor Tax Forms'.

Which bit? when the tax is out? It's out at the end of the month thats on the tax disc. So if the tax disc says 08-11 its out at the end of August and if it says 09-11 its the end of september.

Sorry if I'm jumping in when I shouldn't be but can't find any mention of the matter. I taxed my car for 12 months from June 1 but now want to sell it. I'd like to have the tax now for 3 months only and get the rest refunded. Is this allowed, and if so, how?

    Can anyone advise please?

    Many thanks

You can only claim tax back if you are scrapping or exporting the car.
