Doesn't TV3 have secondary rights behind RTE? Don't they get second picks for both football and hurling or something similar?

You wouldn't have gotten HD from RTÉ. No other GAA has been HD since Tipp v Cork.

Not being a native Irish speaker I have a distinct preference for commentary to be in English ..... at least as an option.

TG4 & maybe (according to the IT link above) TV3 will have Irish commentary.

I have nothing at all against Irish commentary, but the vast majority of Irish citizens are not capable of understanding the Irish commentary.
IMO, as long as the commentary is limited to our native minority language, a huge number of viewers are being deprived.

I would expect there to be at least the possibility of including both English and Irish commentary in the DTT transmission.

I won't be holding my breath though. :(

TV3's GAA coverage has always been 100% English.

The Irish commentary on that link refers to the minor finals which have always been in Irish on RTÉ.

I'm gonna have this issue when Wimbledon is on this year. It's only shown on TG4 and I don't have the British channels. They haven't even had subtitles on the text when makes it worse.

I started a thread about it last year and had my head bitten off and I was called anti-Irish and a West Brit which couldn't be a wronger description of me. It's frustrating

In fairness it doesn't cost much these days to get the BBC in most places accross Ireland (unless you a restricted from puttin up Sat dishes, etc)

I don't want the channel at all. I would eat my own head before paying to get "Celebrity Dancing on Stilts" and all those trashy things that British TV shows.

My main gripe is that Wimbledon was on RTE for a good few years before TG4 had it and it was in English before. I know they don't show The French or Aussie open or Flushing Meadows so I suppose I am asking a bit much.

I'm not a native irish speaker either but I accept that TG4 is primarily an Irish language channel. The Irish I leart at school is enough to understand what is going on.

S4C sometimes have English language radio commentary for Magner League rugby so you may have a point about carrying an extra audio option.

If RTE or TV3 were that interested in Wimbledon then you would imagine that they would outbid TG4.

My guess is that Wimbledon is an incovenience to RTE. Takes up a lot of viewing time, hassle of dealing with rain delays, clashes with GAA coverage at weekend (and World Cup or Euro Championships in some years). They will also struggle to match the quality of the BBC coverage.

Better that you see it in Irish on TG4 than not see it at all I guess.

TV3 didn't have the minor finals last year. This year will be the first, and the first time the issue has arose.

I'm not sure TV3 have broadcast one single programme in the Irish langauge in thirteen years on air, and in fairness its not in their remit to.

TV3 has very little sports rights comparatively speaking with RTÉ and TG4. They litterally have only their Champions League matches and the twelve or so GAA games they have a year (which if you are a GAA fan, is miniscule compared to RTÉ and TG4's coverage). They had the secondary rights to the last Rugby World Cup, but RTÉ have those this year.

The one good thing they had going sporting wise was TV3 Sports Tonight, but that was axed when Vincent Browne came along.

I'm a non-Gaelic/non-Welsh/non-Gallic speaker from NI but I have no problem watching rugby/gaelic/tennis on TG4 as well as rugby/cricket/soccer on S4C and rugby/soccer on BBC Alba. Since the remit of these channels is to promote the native tongue we can't really complain that their commentary is in that language.

Sorry my mistake....thought they transmitted the Minor Football final last year.

It will be interesting to see if they Broadcast the game in Irish.
Personally, I hope they do. Even though I understand very little Irish, I think some traditions should be maintained.

Promote, I can accept ...... but not to the detriment of the majority of Irish licence payers.
National games being broadcast on one channel - exclusively - with commentary in the minority language, is not providing a serveice for the majority of licence payers.

There was an 'excuse' in previous years, where the analogue transmission carried only one audio channel, but with the advent of DTT the facility is available to service the needs of the majority, by also tranmitting an English language commentary for, at minimum, our national games.

From a personal perspective, I find the Irish language commentary more limiting for the minor and other such games, where the players are not as well known to me.

The solution is available on DTT ..... all I can hope is that it is used sometime in the future.

    regards.

Fair point. However RTE/TG4 have not been 'on the ball' regarding digital services. No 'red button' yet on either satellite or DTT. They're more like ITV than BBC - no ITV 'red button' at all on UK DTT and very limited on satellite. I do agree with you that if the solution is available it should be made use of but don't hold your breath.
