Deferral and Grant options

I began a 3 year hons degree in september 2009 and completed my first year. 2months into my second year i had to defer for a year due to family circumstances. I had been awarded my student grant and top up grant for the year and was on back to education. I immediately contacted the local authority and cancelled my grant (i hadnt received my first installment anyway), and back to education office who transfered my payment back to one parent family. I forwarded a copy of my deferal letter from the college to confirm i would be returning to college in September 2011.
Im wondering if anyone knows what are the circumstances now in relation to my grant. Do i still qualify for both payments as i was registered in 2009 before the new changes came in?? Also do i get a new application for the higher education grant or do i contact my local authority for a renewal grant form???
any advice would be appreciated :)

I'd say your a special case and I doubt many would have the info. Go in to your council office and speak to them. Its the only way to get things done. Wouldn't even bother calling/emailing. I always find going in and bothering them puts a fire under their ass.

If its an honours degree, you should be able to pick up where you left off. If you're still on One parent family, you don't have to go on back to education allowance and you can hold on to that payment plus you can get the same grant you got before - that's provided your circumstances have not changed since u were in college before.
You may have to apply for the grant again (new application form) but u should check with your awarding body who gave u the grant at the beginning.
All the above is based on last year's rules - you never know what rules may change this year but this won't be known until maybe July. good luck:rolleyes:
