Have a 98 Opel Combo, was off the road for last 9 months and tax had expired etc. Anywya got it back in working order and got insured, and about to update tax on it but do i need an nct on it? Local mechanic i was talking to said i dont seeing as i have private insurance. Filling up tax form and it asks for number of and expiry date of nct/certificate of roadworthiness. I never had a nct for the van in the past so is this a new requiremnt?? Thanks in adavnce

You need a DOE test before you can legally drive it on the road Joe.

Is a doe the same as nct? Forgive my ignorance on the matter, bu tim confused with the mechanic telling me its fine without due to insurance.

    As requested...

DOE is a bit like an NCT, but for commercial vehicles. It's not done by the same company as the NCT, there are independant testers around the country who undertake the tests.

You can't tax a commercial without a DOE.

The fact that i have private insurance then is irrelevant?

Totally irrelevant. Doesn't matter how the vehicle is insured, it's classified as a commercial vehicle and therefore needs an annual DOE test.

I think calling it "commercial" is a bit misleading here, when it comes to vehicle for private use.

"Goods vehicles" - these are supposed to be DOE'd instead of being NCT'ed no matter what they are used for.

    Potatoe/Potatoe

It's a panel van with 2 seats. Even if it never carries anything in the back it's a commercial vehicle.

i had this same problem, had a 98 combo too actually.
van was privatley taxed, which leaves a problem.....you cant test a commercial in a NCT center, nor can you DOE it.i put it threw a DOE but couldnt get an actual tax office DOE cert because it was privatley taxed but had the pass slip from garage, that was pretty much the only option or get van assessed and changed to commercial

So the pass slip did the job at tax office?

A commercial vehicle is a commercial vehicle. It's taxation class does not effect what type of vehicle it is.

All commercial vehicles require a DOE certificate to be driven on the road.
