    Hey ,

I have a chance to buy a secondhand Remington 700 in .17 Remington calibre.
I know the lad selling it and the gun is in lovely condition and its going cheap because he's emigrating. Does anyone out there own one and can tell me their experiences with it? also how much is the ammo roughly ?

    Thanks

Had one for years, great round, the ammo is a bit pricey and only remington make is as far as i know, super fox round, very flat and fast

my buddy uses a remington 17 for 15 years, some fox gun he can shoot foxes at 300 yards all day with it, ammo is not cheap but you get what you pay for....

Is the .17 remington affected badly by wind??

I had one years ago and found that the barrel fouled badly in cold wet conditions , you'd look down the barrel and it would be filthy after a few shots , the light bullet doesn't hold the energy as well as say a .223 would over the same distance And to the best of my knowledge its remmy only ammo.

Had it out for a test shot there this evening , massive kick out of it and its not screwcut for a surpressor.. the only thing thats stopping me purchase is I have a feeling that the ammo is too expensive

And too hard got, you could be held to ransom on it.

I know a couple of guys who had them for years, but changed to .223 and never turned back as cheap to feed and feck all difference on charlie out to 200

How do you mean massive kick out of it ? There should be virtually zero felt recoil unless the bolt headspace is huge or something else seriously wrong.

Great calibre but like the swift its too expensive to run, but if its in good nick and at a bargain price maybe it might be a good purchase to rebarell it to .223 or .204

A massive kick as in the muzzle jumps about 3 inches in the air when you fire and theres a massive muzzle flash.. Nevermind I found some ammo on www.shoot.ie and it averages about just over €2 per shot

    Rabbit Assassin,
If you know the lad, buy it, you cannot lose.

The 700 is one of the: best, most sucessful, and versatile firearms ever made.

Marine Corp snipers use the best equipment around. Their core rifle starts with a bolt action 700 which is then modified. Additionally, their S&B scopes are modified as well.

Do not hesitate to get this rifle. If you are getting a good deal, all the more reason to buy it.

Care to share the price?

Something wrong with it if its recoiling that bad , the one i had from new didn't recoil at all , it only fires a 25 grain bullet ffs

    Rabitt Assassin,
That sounds like a pretty good deal, however, that price of ammo is brutal.

Does anyone know if this rifle can be tweaked to take a more common round like the 223?

Are you new to shooting and want to shoot a lot? Or are you like me, that buys stocks in metals before you buy your next gross of ammo?

I have my shooters - cheap ammo, and then my game day toys - expensive ammo.

I feed my 700's the cheap stuff at the range - Remmy green box. Come closer to opening day, I'll run a few boxes of Superformance through it to get the feel of them for the field.

I would still go for it. With any luck, you'll be reloading in a few years.

This wiki link is worth a read.

somthing is definitely wrong. mine has no recoil. (this i my third one )there are a lot of cheaper .17 rems for sale. a lot of lads switched over to 223. as the ammo is a lot cheaper and a lot easier on the barrell. barrell on the 17 do wear out a lot quicker than 223. normally it's throat erosion with fire cracking on lands which will cause higher pressures and increase recoil a bit. check out the case primer and see if it looks odd it should be flat not deep or cratured, if it is walk away cos it needs to be rebarrelled. 2 of mine went this way after 1800ish rounds i got my present one rebarrelled by border barrels slighly heavier barrell and its a dinger at the moment
ammo is expensive but worth it
but when this barrel wears out i'll put a .223 barrell on it

    Put a .223 Truflite 24" 1/8 and you'll be happy out ;)

In regards to the op, I'm guessing the sound is making him flinch as they are quite loud on the ears

Yes! I had one and it was the only reason I sold it.

You have to keep it very clean 'de copper' EVERY 20 rounds at worst.

    Ammo pricey and scarce enough.

S/H don't pay any more than €150-€200 as it will be impossible to resell

Heavy recoil means it hasn't been cleaned !!!!!!!!!!!

A riflesmith here bought a batch new off the importer and rebarreld them to .223 and/or .204 ;)

Only cost you the price of the barrel and labour to fit it & should be a substitution on your current licence though (unless you've a Super like mine ) ;)

I spoke to local garda at the time, he thought it would not have been an issue as in.... like for like change on license. border bls adviced me at the time to go 223, but i was set up for 17 so i left it as it was. price of ammo is the sore bit

Did you change from .17hmr to .17 Rem? Depending on Supers attitude to .223 you could have changed .17hmr to .223 :eek:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 423 ✭✭triskell

nah. i had a 17 rem which got mangled in a car crash .. beyond repair. bought a shot out one for very small money and replaced the barrel, everyone was suggesting 223 for the rebarrel but i just wasn't too keen on switching over. if i had, i think i would have be up money by now even with buying 223 gear. ah sure there's always the next time. the super in athlone is fairly alright, if ya can justify it he will give it to you
